Chapter 8 - The Trust Fund of Tomorrow

Spring arrived at the Vance Estate with an explosion of color. The cherry blossoms along the driveway were in full bloom, dropping soft pink petals onto the limestone paths.

It was the twins’ thirteenth birthday—their first birthday since the nightmare had ended.

The grand dining room was filled with life. There were no cold corporate partners or superficial socialites. It was just Mark, Eleanor, the twins, and a few of their close friends from their new school. The table was piled high with roasted chicken, fresh pasta, and a massive chocolate cake made by the estate chef.

"Make a wish, guys!" Mark cheered, holding up his camera as the candles flickered against the twins’ smiling faces.

Lily looked at Noah. They didn't need to speak; their twin connection was stronger than ever. They closed their eyes together and blew out the candles in a single, synchronized breath.

After the cake was served, Eleanor stood up, tapping her glass with a silver spoon. "Before we open the presents, I have a very special announcement to make regarding your mother’s legacy."

She gestured to Arthur Vance, the family attorney, who walked into the room holding a beautifully bound legal portfolio.

"As of today," Eleanor explained, her eyes beaming with pride, "the Sarah Vance-Carter Foundation has been officially established. The trust fund that Diana tried so desperately to steal has been converted into a non-profit organization dedicated to funding emergency shelters and legal advocacy groups for victims of domestic child abuse across the country."

Lily’s breath caught. She looked at her father, who was smiling warmly, nodding in absolute agreement.

"And," Eleanor continued, looking directly at Lily, "the foundation will be overseen by a board of directors, with a permanent seat reserved for Lily and Noah Carter when they turn eighteen. The worn journal you kept, Lily, will be published anonymously—with your permission—as the opening manifesto of the foundation, to show the world that the voices of children can never be truly silenced."

Tears pricked the corners of Lily’s eyes. The memories of those 781 days of hunger and cold were no longer just a source of trauma; they were being transformed into a shield to protect thousands of other children who were still trapped behind locked doors.

"Thank you, Grandma," Lily whispered, standing up to throw her arms around Eleanor’s neck.

Noah joined the hug, his silver pocket watch ticking steadily against his chest. Tick. Tick. Tick. A steady, unbreakable rhythm of a future that belonged entirely to them.
