Chapter 9 - The Legacy of the Willow

Five years later, the summer sun of 2031 beat down warmly upon the pristine campus of the university. At eighteen, Lily Carter was a force of nature. She was tall, radiant, with her mother’s fierce, intelligent gray eyes, preparing to start her freshman year as a pre-law student, specializing in child advocacy.

Noah stood beside her, helping her carry the final boxes into her dorm room. He had grown into a confident, handsome young man, his anxiety managed beautifully by years of support and the steady, grounding presence of his family. He was an accomplished pianist, having found solace in the music his mother had loved so much.

"Can you believe we’re finally here?" Noah asked, setting down a heavy box of textbooks. He reached into his pocket, checking his silver watch out of habit.

"We built our way here, Noah," Lily smiled, walking over to the window.

The dorm room looked out over a beautiful, sprawling courtyard centered around a massive weeping willow tree. Sitting on the wooden bench beneath the tree were Mark and Eleanor, chatting comfortably, watching the students pass by. They looked like the pillars of a unified, unbreakable family.

Lily walked over to her desk and unpacked the final, most precious item she owned. It was a beautiful, custom-made shadow box frame. Inside, mounted against blue velvet, was her old, worn journal from her childhood, flanked by the silver keychain made from the shard of her mother's Spode plate.

She traced the glass of the frame with her finger.

Dear Mom, she thought in her mind. The count stopped a long time ago. We aren't counting the days since you left anymore. We’re counting the days of the life we’ve built because of the strength you gave us. We aren't extra anymore. We are the whole story.
