Chapter 5 - The Public Mask Slips

The State Attorney General's office moved with surprising speed, bolstered by the irrefutable evidence handed over by Licenciada Ramos. On a bright Tuesday morning, two unmarked vehicles pulled up to the wrought-iron gates of Don Hector’s estate.
Agents from the Policía Investigadora stepped out, bearing an official warrant for the arrest of Mariela for aggravated assault and child endangerment, alongside a search warrant to seize the master server in the study.
A neighbor recorded the entire event on a smartphone from across the street. The video—which captured Mariela screaming furiously in her silk pajamas as she was cuffed and led down her father's grand driveway, while Doña Teresa shrieked at the officers, threatening to have them all fired—went viral on Mexican social media within four hours.
The hashtag #JusticiaParaSofia began trending nationally.
By noon, the media was parked outside Don Hector’s corporate offices. The press had picked up the story, fueled by leaked details of the security camera footage that Ramos had meticulously submitted to the court records—records that were public domain.
In a desperate bid to control the narrative, Don Hector called an emergency press conference at a high-end hotel in downtown Guadalajara. Dressed in an immaculate grey suit, standing beside his trembling wife, Hector faced a wall of flashing cameras and shouting journalists.
"This is a deeply tragic family misunderstanding that has been twisted out of proportion by disloyal elements," Hector announced into the microphones, his voice regal and composed. "My daughter Mariela suffered a terrible, accidental slip while holding a hot beverage. What my estranged son and his wife are claiming is a bitter, financially motivated extortion scheme. They are demanding millions of pesos from my company, and when I refused to yield to their blackmail, they released edited, manipulated footage to destroy my family's noble reputation."
A reporter from a major news network raised her hand sharply. "Don Hector! If it was an accident, why does the hospital report state that no one at the residence called emergency services or administered first aid to a two-year-old girl?"
"My wife immediately provided assistance!" Hector lied smoothly without blinking. "The mother became hysterical and removed the child before proper medical attention could be finalized on site. We love our granddaughter Sofia immensely. We are devastated by her injuries, but we will not allow our family name to be dragged through the mud by extortionists."
Watching the broadcast live from their lawyer’s office, Camila felt a surge of rage so intense her vision blurred.
"He's lying," Camila said, standing up. "He is lying on national television. He is turning our baby's agony into a story about money!"
"Let him talk," Ramos said calmly, pointing at the TV screen. "Every lie he tells on camera is a gift to us. Under Article 247 of the Penal Code, making false statements to the public during an active judicial investigation can be entered as evidence of consciousness of guilt and intent to obstruct justice."
"I want to respond," Camila demanded, looking at Daniel. "I want the world to see what they did."
Two hours later, Camila and Daniel held their own broadcast outside the Fiscalía General. Camila did not wear expensive clothes or hire a PR team. She stood before the microphones holding Sofia’s medical intake photographs—clear, graphic images of the bright red, blistering burns stretching across her baby’s small neck and cheek—and a copy of the official hospital timestamp.
"My name is Camila," she began, her voice ringing clear and steady through the crowded street. "Four days ago, my mother-in-law told me to 'get that child out of her house' while my two-year-old daughter screamed in agony from second-degree burns. My father-in-law just told you that they loved Sofia, and that this was an extortion scheme."
She held up the high-resolution photo of Sofia’s injuries for every camera to see.

"This is not a financial dispute," Camila continued, tears shining in her eyes but her posture unyielding. "This is the face of my baby girl after Mariela threw boiling coffee at her. We have offered to settle nothing. We have asked for zero dollars. We want one thing, and one thing only: absolute justice under the law. We want Mariela behind bars, and we want the world to know that no amount of money or influence can wash the blood off this family's hands."
The contrast between Don Hector's polished, cold denial and Camila’s raw, authentic pain struck a massive chord across the nation. Within hours, public opinion turned into a tidal wave. Protesters began gathering outside Don Hector’s corporate headquarters carrying signs that read Justice for Sofia and No More Protected Monsters.
