Chapter 8 - The Falling Dominoes

The arrest and imprisonment of Mariela sent shockwaves through Don Hector’s empire, causing a catastrophic chain reaction that no amount of money could halt.
Within forty-eight hours of the preliminary hearing, the federal tax authority (SAT) announced a comprehensive audit into Don Hector’s real estate holdings, prompted by anonymous financial disclosures sent directly to their fraud division—disclosures that contained detailed evidence of shell companies used to launder construction funds.
The source of the leak was none other than Daniel himself, who had utilized his old administrative access to unearth years of off-the-books accounting stored on the same family server.
Deprived of his financial leverage and facing public disgrace, Hector’s board of directors voted unanimously to remove him as Chief Executive Officer of his own company. The news was splashed across every major financial newspaper in the country: Real Estate Titan Ousted Amid Family Scandal and Tax Investigation.
Desperate, isolated, and abandoned by their high-society friends, Doña Teresa drove to Daniel and Camila’s apartment late one rainy evening.
Camila opened the door, keeping the security chain attached.
Doña Teresa stood in the dimly lit hallway, her designer raincoat dripping water onto the floor. Gone was the arrogant, immaculate matriarch who had ruled her home with cold contempt. Her face was hollow, her eyes bloodshot, her hands visibly trembling.
"Camila... please," Teresa begged, her voice a cracked whisper. "Please let me see my son."
Daniel stepped into view behind Camila. He didn't unhook the chain. He simply looked at his mother through the narrow gap in the door.
"What do you want, Teresa?" Daniel asked, his voice flat.
"Daniel... they put Mariela in a general population cell," Teresa sobbed, pressing her hands against the doorframe. "She is terrified. She is sick. Your father has lost the business. They are seizing our assets. We are destroyed, Daniel! Please... go to the prosecutor. Tell them you forgive her. Tell them it was a mistake so they can let her come home!"
"A mistake?" Daniel shook his head slowly, a sad, bitter smile touching his lips. "You still call it a mistake. You stood on that patio while your granddaughter’s skin was peeling off, Teresa. You didn't give her water. You didn't offer a towel. You called her 'that child' and demanded that she be thrown out like garbage."
"I was angry! I wasn't thinking!" Teresa cried out. "I'm your mother, Daniel! How can you be so heartless to your own mother?"
"You taught me how to be heartless," Daniel replied calmly. "You spent my entire life teaching me that family means protecting the abuser and discarding the victim. But I unlearned your lessons the day I saw my daughter suffer."
"We will give you everything!" Teresa pleaded, slipping an envelope through the gap. "The house in Tapalpa! The shares in the firm! Everything is yours, Daniel, just save your sister!"
Camila reached down, picked up the envelope, and handed it straight back through the gap into Teresa’s trembling hands.
"Keep your money, Doña Teresa," Camila said, her voice steady and full of dignity. "We don't need your wealth to be happy. But you are going to need every peso you have left for your daughter's legal defense. Goodnight."

Daniel closed the door firmly, locking it.
Outside in the quiet hallway, the sound of Doña Teresa’s desperate weeping echoed for a long time, until her slow, faltering footsteps finally faded down the stairs into the dark rainy night.
