Chapter 7 - The Preliminary Hearing

The judicial complex in Guadalajara was surrounded by news crews and activists as the black SUV carrying Don Hector, Mariela, and their legal team arrived. Mariela wore dark sunglasses and covered her face with a silk scarf, flanked by two private security guards who struggled to push through the roaring crowd.
Moments later, Daniel and Camila arrived, walking hand in hand, carrying Sofia in a covered stroller protected from the flashing lights. The crowd hushed out of respect, several people calling out, "Justice for Sofia! Stay strong, Camila!"
Inside Courtroom 4B, the air was heavy with tension. Judge Guillermo Sandoval, a veteran magistrate known for his zero-tolerance policy toward procedural corruption, presided over the bench.
Licenciado Valenzuela took the floor first for the defense. He launched into a aggressive strategy designed to discredit the physical evidence and character-assassinate Camila.
"Your Honor," Valenzuela argued smoothly, presenting a series of printed bank statements. "We contend that the video file submitted by the prosecution is incomplete and contextually misleading. The mother, Camila, has a history of financial dependence on the family. On the afternoon in question, Camila had an intense argument with my client, Mariela, regarding financial loans. My client was holding a hot beverage, was physically bumped during the altercation, and the spill was a tragic, unintentional consequence of the mother's volatile behavior."
Valenzuela then turned toward Camila, his voice laced with venom. "Is it not true, Mrs. Camila, that you have repeatedly asked your father-in-law for money over the past three years?"
Licenciada Ramos stood up instantly. "Objection! Relevance, Your Honor. The financial history of the parents has zero bearing on the clear physical evidence of an assault on a minor."
"Sustained," Judge Sandoval ruled sharply. "Counselor Valenzuela, stick to the physical facts of the incident."
"Your Honor," Ramos stepped forward, connecting a secure tablet to the court's projection system. "The defense claims an altercation occurred that caused an accidental spill. We request permission to play Exhibit A—the raw, unedited security footage captured by the defendant's own household cameras, verified by digital forensic specialists."
The lights in the courtroom dimmed. The massive monitors mounted on the walls flickered to life.
The crystal-clear 4K footage filled the room. The silence in the courtroom was absolute as the scene played out.
The image showed Sofia sitting peacefully on the ground. It showed Mariela walking out with the mug. It captured, with devastating clarity, the precise moment Mariela looked at the toddler, tightened her grip on the mug, stepped forward with clear intent, and launched the boiling coffee into the child's face.
The courtroom gasped. Several observers covered their mouths in horror.
Then came the audio track—which Daniel’s technical team had managed to recover from the server's ambient microphone feed, previously thought unrecorded.
Mariela’s voice echoed through the speaker system, clear and sharp: "Keep your dirty hands off my son's toys, you little rat!"
Followed immediately by the sickening sound of the liquid hitting skin, Sofia’s horrific, piercing scream, and Doña Teresa’s booming voice from the doorway: "Get that child out of my house! Clean this mess up before she ruins the patio!"
Doña Teresa, sitting in the front row of the gallery, turned pale as chalk. Mariela buried her face in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably.
"As the court can clearly hear and see," Ramos said, her voice echoing in the dead quiet room, "there was no argument. There was no bump. There was only a malicious, unprovoked attack on a helpless two-year-old child, followed by absolute callousness from the adults present."
Judge Sandoval looked down from his bench, his face dark with anger. He leaned toward his microphone.
"This court finds sufficient evidence to bind the defendant, Mariela, over for trial on charges of aggravated battery against a minor with premeditation," Sandoval declared, his gavel striking the wooden block with a resounding crack. "Furthermore, given the severity of the evidence and the demonstrated attempts to tamper with public narrative, bail is revoked immediately. The defendant will await trial in pre-trial detention at the Femenil State Penitentiary."
"No! No! Dad, help me!" Mariela shrieked as state bailiffs stepped forward, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.
Don Hector jumped up, his face purple with rage. "You can't do this! Do you know who I am?"
"Sit down, sir!" Judge Sandoval ordered, pointing a finger at Hector. "Or I will have you held in contempt and joined with your daughter in a holding cell!"

As Mariela was dragged screaming down the side hallway toward the detention block, Doña Teresa collapsed into her husband's arms, weeping hysterical tears of public ruin.
Daniel and Camila stood side by side, watching the scene unfold without a trace of joy—only the quiet, cold satisfaction of truth finally catching up to power.
