Chapter 2 - The Footage and the Phone Call

The room went dead silent. Julia stood up, stepping toward Dr. Chen as he placed the tablet flat on the wooden table.

He pressed play.

The surveillance video showed the third-floor parking garage of the hospital from 7:15 that morning. Evan’s silver SUV pulled into a space near the elevators. The camera angle was high, but the interior of the vehicle was clearly visible through the front windshield under the bright garage lights.

In the video, Evan parked the car, turned off the ignition, and unbuckled his seatbelt. He turned around to face four-year-old Lily in her car seat. From a plastic bakery bag sitting on the passenger seat, he pulled out a brightly frosted pink donut.

He didn't just give it to her. He held it out, spoke to her for nearly two minutes while she shook her small head, and then leaned in close, pointing his finger directly at her face.

The body language was unmistakable. It wasn't a loving father giving his child a treat; it was an adult leaning over a helpless toddler, intimidating her.

The video showed Lily crying, wiping her eyes with her small sleeves, before Evan handed her the donut. He watched her take two bites, pulled out a wet wipe, cleaned her hands, and then dragged her out of the car.

Julia Vance lowered her head into her hands, letting out a slow, horrified breath. "Oh, God..."

The security guard looked away from me, his posture softening instantly as a look of deep shame crossed his face. "I'm so sorry, ma'am," he whispered to me.

Dr. Chen paused the video, his jaw set like granite. "I’ve already contacted the Chief of Medical Affairs and Child Protective Services. This isn't just medical endangerment, Julia. This man deliberately sabotaged a critical surgical procedure for a child with failing kidneys, and then attempted to frame his wife to trigger a child abuse investigation."

My heart was pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat. I wasn't crazy. I wasn't a bad mother. The evidence was right there in cold, unyielding high-definition video.

"Where is Evan right now?" I asked, my voice trembling with a mixture of immense relief and burning rage.

"He’s in the pediatric waiting area," Dr. Chen said softly. "He thinks you are currently being processed for an emergency psychiatric hold and that Child Protective Services is preparing to place Lily in his sole custody."

"He planned this," I realized aloud, the pieces falling together with terrifying clarity. "He didn't just want to delay the surgery. He wanted me out of the house. He wanted custody of Lily, and he wanted control of her trust fund."

Three months ago, my father had passed away, leaving a two-million-dollar medical and educational trust exclusively for Lily, with me named as the sole trustee. If I were deemed mentally unstable or guilty of child abuse, Evan, as her father, would petition to take over the trust.

"We have two officers from the Chicago Police Department downstairs," Dr. Chen told me, placing a gentle hand on my shoulder. "They are coming up to interview him. But before they arrest him, Nora... what do you want to do?"

I wiped the tears from my cheeks, standing up straight. The exhaustion that had weighed down my limbs for months vanished, replaced by an icy, unwavering resolve.

"I want to walk out to that waiting room," I said, looking Dr. Chen dead in the eye. "And I want him to know that his clock just ran out."
