Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail

By 2:00 p.m., Evan was sitting in a holding cell at the 14th Precinct, charged with child endangerment, obstruction of justice, and filing a false police report.

I sat in Dr. Chen’s private office while Lily slept peacefully in a recovery room down the hall, wrapped in her favorite dinosaur blanket, guarded by a hospital security officer to ensure Evan’s family couldn't attempt to visit her.

Sitting across from me was Sarah Sterling—the fierce, brilliant family law attorney whom my late father had retained for his estate planning. I had called her the moment Evan was led away in handcuffs.

"Nora," Sarah said, placing a thick black binder on the desk. "The police report from the hospital gives us an immediate, airtight foundation for a temporary restraining order and full, exclusive custody of Lily. But while Evan was being processed, I had my financial investigator run a preliminary audit on your joint accounts."

I leaned forward, my stomach tightening. "What did you find?"

Sarah turned the binder toward me, pointing to a series of printed bank statements highlighted in bright yellow.

"Evan didn't just plan this morning's event on a whim," Sarah explained, her pencil tracing the numbers. "Over the last six months—coinciding exactly with Lily’s kidney diagnosis—Evan has systematically drained ninety thousand dollars from your joint savings account."

"Ninety thousand?!" I gasped. "Where did the money go? He told me he was moving those funds into a high-yield medical reserve trust for Lily!"

"He moved them into an unlisted account at First National Bank," Sarah said softly, looking at me with deep sympathy. "An account co-signed by a woman named Chloe Bennett."

The name hit me like a physical blow. Chloe Bennett was the twenty-six-year-old lead marketing coordinator at Evan’s architecture firm—the woman Evan had brought to our house for dinner three months ago, whom he had described as "a brilliant junior colleague who needs a mentor."

"Chloe..." I whispered, clutching my forehead as the horrifying picture completed itself in my mind. "He was having an affair."

"It gets worse," Sarah continued calmly. "On Tuesday night—less than forty-eight hours ago—an application was submitted to a private real estate group for a luxury three-bedroom townhouse in Miami, Florida. The lease was signed by Evan Hayes and Chloe Bennett, with a start date of September 1st."

I let out a breathless, bitter laugh.

"He wasn't just trying to take Lily’s trust fund," I realized, the full scope of his evil unfolding before me. "He was going to use the false child abuse report to strip me of custody, take control of her two-million-dollar inheritance, declare me mentally unfit, and move to Florida with his mistress using my daughter's money."

"And he tried to delay the surgery today," Sarah added, "because if Lily had the procedure today, she would be recovering for the next six weeks, making a sudden move to Florida legally and logistically complicated before his lease start date."

He had gambled with our daughter's failing kidneys—risking permanent, irreversible renal damage—just so he could finalize his getaway timeline with another woman.

"Sarah," I said, my voice dropping into a tone of quiet, lethal precision. "I want every single account frozen. I want an emergency ex parte motion filed for sole legal and physical custody, and I want an immediate subpoena issued for Chloe Bennett’s employment records and bank statements."

"Already drafting the papers, Nora," Sarah smiled grimly. "Evan thought he was playing chess against an exhausted housewife. He has no idea he just walked into a firing squad."
