Chapter 5 - The Mistress's Surrender

At 4:30 p.m., while Evan’s defense attorney was frantically trying to arrange a bail hearing, I drove to the glass-and-steel skyscraper in downtown Chicago where Evan worked as a senior partner at Hayes & Mercer Architecture.
I didn't go alone. I was accompanied by Sarah Sterling and a court-appointed process server carrying a stack of emergency subpoenas.
We walked into the sleek, open-concept office on the twelfth floor. The receptionist recognized me immediately, stepping out from behind her desk with a nervous, awkward smile. "Mrs. Hayes! Hi... Evan isn't in his office right now, he said he had a family emergency—"
"I know where he is," I said coolly. "Is Chloe Bennett at her desk?"
The receptionist blanched, pointing silently toward a glass-walled corner office near the back.
I walked down the hallway, the sharp click of my heels against the polished concrete floor drawing the attention of dozens of architects and designers. I pushed open the glass door to Chloe Bennett’s office without knocking.
Chloe was sitting at her desk, typing furiously on her laptop, wearing a chic designer dress—a dress that I realized, with a sickening jolt, had been purchased using our joint account three weeks ago.
She looked up, startled. "Nora? What... what are you doing here?"
I closed the door behind me, leaning against the frame, while Sarah set a thick Manila envelope squarely on Chloe’s glass desk.
"You have five minutes to listen to me, Chloe," I said smoothly, my hands tucked into the pockets of my trench coat. "Before the state police arrive here to serve an evidence hold on your work computer."
Chloe’s face turned bright red, then pale. "I don't know what you're talking about! Evan and I are just professional colleagues—"
"Evan was arrested four hours ago at Children’s Memorial Hospital," I interrupted, my voice calm, level, and entirely devoid of mercy. "He is currently sitting in a jail cell charged with felony child endangerment and criminal fraud."
Chloe’s eyes went wide with sheer terror. Her hands froze over her keyboard. "What?! Arrested?!"
"He deliberately fed my four-year-old daughter solid food to sabotage her kidney surgery," I said, taking a step closer to her desk. "And then he attempted to frame me for child abuse so he could steal my daughter's two-million-dollar trust fund—the trust fund he promised to share with you in Miami on September 1st."
Chloe let out a strangled gasp, her hands flying to her mouth. "Miami... how did you...?"
"We have the lease agreement, Chloe," Sarah Sterling spoke up, stepping forward with her professional authority. "We have the wire transfers from the First National account, totaling ninety thousand dollars of stolen marital funds. Under Illinois law, as an active co-conspirator in the conversion of marital assets and fraud, your personal assets, bank accounts, and employment position are now subject to immediate legal freeze and civil litigation."
"I didn't know about the surgery!" Chloe suddenly burst into tears, shaking her head frantically. "I swear to God, Nora! Evan told me you were divorced! He told me you lived in a separate apartment and that you were mentally ill! He said the trust fund was his personal investment capital!"
"He lied to you, Chloe," I said, looking at her with cold detachment. "Just like he lied to me. Just like he lied to a four-year-old girl while holding a frosted donut in a hospital parking garage."
Chloe sank back into her leather office chair, sobbing uncontrollably, realizing her glamorous life, her career, and her relationship were instantly turning into a toxic legal nightmare.

"If you want to avoid being named as a co-defendant in a criminal conspiracy case," Sarah told Chloe, sliding an affidavit across the desk, "you will sign this statement confirming that Evan Hayes transferred those funds without his wife’s knowledge, and you will turn over every text message, email, and financial record between you and Evan from the last six months."
Chloe picked up a pen with trembling fingers. "Where do I sign?"
