Chapter 2 - The Domino Effect

By sunrise the next morning, the scandal was the front-page story of every major financial newspaper and news network in the country. Headlines screamed: METROPOLITAN FRAUD: WHITFIELD MEDICAL FACES FEDERAL SEIZURE ON WEDDING NIGHT and THE $420M LIE.

In our sunlit penthouse overlooking Central Park, the atmosphere was serene. The smell of fresh espresso filled the kitchen as Ethan placed a plate of warm pancakes in front of our triplets. Lily giggled, dipping her fork into maple syrup, while James and Noah bickered playfully over who had the bigger strawberry.

Ethan walked behind my chair, resting his hands gently on my shoulders, leaning down to press a soft kiss against my temple. "How are you feeling, my love?"

"Lighter," I admitted, looking up into his warm gray eyes. "For three years, I felt like I was running a race with heavy weights tied to my ankles. Last night, those weights finally dropped."

"This is only the beginning," Ethan reminded me gently. "Marcus's legal team is already attempting to damage control. They're going to try to claim that you signed a secondary agreement or that you donated the IP during the marriage."

"Let them try," I smiled faintly. "They haven't seen the digital access logs yet."

Meanwhile, three miles downtown, Marcus was living through a living nightmare. Released on a hefty bail, he sat in the corner office of his high-rise headquarters, surrounded by panic-stricken executives and sweating defense attorneys.

"The Harrington Group has formally pulled out of the $420 million deal," his chief financial officer announced, his voice tight. "They're filing a suit for fraudulent misrepresentation to recover their $15 million earnest deposit."

"Fix it!" Marcus slammed his fist onto the mahogany desk. "Call Richard Harrington! Tell him Celeste’s child will inherit half this company!"

"Richard Harrington won't take your calls, Marcus," his lead attorney sighed, rubbing his temples. "And Celeste has left the penthouse. Her family’s security detail moved her back to her father's estate early this morning. Furthermore, the board has officially suspended you as CEO effective immediately."

Marcus slumped back into his chair, breathing heavily. His entire world—his wealth, his pride, his status—was crumbling around him. He pulled out his personal phone and stared at my name in his old contacts. He couldn't accept that the quiet, broken woman he thought he had discarded like trash was the architect of his total annihilation.

Desperate and drowning in rage, Marcus grabbed his jacket and walked out of the building, ignoring the flashing cameras of the press corps waiting outside.
