Chapter 8 - Family Above All

Despite the meteoric success of Aegis, my true sanctuary was always home.
One sunny Saturday morning, our estate in Greenwich, Connecticut, was filled with the sound of pure, unbridled laughter.
The triplets—now turning three—were chasing our golden retriever, Barnaby, across the manicured lawn. Noah was leading the charge with a toy captain's hat, James was cheering him on, and little Lily was riding on Ethan’s shoulders, giggling uncontrollably as Ethan pretended to be a roaring monster.
I sat on the patio porch, sipping warm tea, watching the scene unfold before me.
Ethan swung Lily down into his arms, handed the boys their juice boxes, and walked over to sit beside me on the porch swing. He pulled me into his side, wrapping his long arm tightly around me.
"What are you thinking about?" he asked softly, resting his chin against my head.
"I was thinking about how impossible this all felt four years ago," I admitted, turning to look into his dark eyes. "When I was in that hospital room, stripped of my dignity, my work, and my happiness... I truly believed my life was over."
"You were never broken, Eleanor," Ethan said, his voice filled with deep, unwavering conviction. "You were just a diamond hidden beneath a pile of rocks. All I did was hold the light so you could see how bright you already were."

"Thank you, Ethan. For loving me when I couldn't even love myself."
"Always, my darling," he murmured, leaning in to press a tender, lingering kiss to my lips. "Always."
