Chapter 7 - The Shadow of the Past

Ivy sat frozen in the armchair, looking down at the powerful man kneeling at her feet. His tears were warm against the back of her fingers.
For six long years, she had survived on sheer, unadulterated anger and survival instinct. She had built a wall around her heart so thick that no one could get close enough to hurt her again. But watching Brian—this terrifying, beautiful titan—unravel himself completely before her destroyed every defense she possessed.
"Brian..." Ivy whispered, her voice cracking.
"Don't give me an answer now," Brian pleaded softly, kissing her knuckles again. "Just let me earn it. Let me show you what it means to be cared for. Let me be a father to Daniel and Ava."
Before Ivy could respond, the library door clicked open softly.
Two tiny figures stood in the doorway, dressed in matching flannel pajamas. Daniel was rubbing his eyes, holding a stuffed bear, while Ava stood beside him, clutching her blanket.
"Mommy?" Ava whimpered softly. "Why is Mr. Brian crying?"
Brian quickly stood up, wiping his eyes with the back of his hand, turning his face away for a second to regain his composure. "I’m not crying, sweetheart. Just... something in my eye."
Daniel walked over slowly, looking between his mother and Brian. "Are you guys going to be mad at each other again?"
Ivy leaned down, pulling both children into her arms, kissing their soft cheeks. "No, baby. No one is mad. Mr. Brian was just talking to Mommy."
Daniel looked up at Brian, his small hazel eyes bright with curiosity. "Mr. Brian? Are you our daddy?"
The question hung in the air like a sudden drop in atmospheric pressure.
Brian’s heart stopped. He looked at Ivy, wordlessly asking for permission.
Ivy swallowed hard, her heart aching with a profound, sudden clarity. She looked at her son—a boy who had spent six years asking why other kids at school had fathers while he had none. She looked at Ava, who was watching Brian with hopeful, innocent eyes.
Ivy nodded gently.
Brian sank back down to his knees, his hands trembling as he reached out to touch Daniel’s shoulder.
"Yes, Daniel," Brian choked out, his voice thick with tears. "I am your daddy. I’m so sorry it took me so long to find you."
Daniel didn't cry. He looked at Brian’s face, then reached out his tiny hand and touched the cleft in Brian’s chin—the exact replica of his own.
"Tooth Fairy Granny said you were our daddy," Daniel said simply, a bright, triumphant smile spreading across his face. "She gave me twenty dollars!"
Ava squealed with joy and threw her small arms around Brian’s neck, knocking the giant man slightly backward onto the carpet. "Daddy! You have a helicopter! Can we fly it now?!"
May you like
Brian wrapped his arms around both children, pulling them tightly against his chest, burying his face in their soft hair as quiet, heavy sobs shook his broad frame.
Ivy watched them, tears falling freely down her face, a warm, radiant light blooming deep inside her chest where cold fear used to live.
