Chapter 9 - The Trial and the Healing

Before the new beginning could be truly complete, the ghosts of the past required their final judgment.
In November, the trial of Michelle Austin took place at the New York Supreme Court.
The courtroom was packed with journalists, legal teams, and public spectators. Michelle sat at the defense table, wearing a drab orange prison jumpsuit, her hair unkempt, her manicured nails long gone. She looked bitter, hollow, and defeated.
Ivy sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in an elegant navy wool coat, Brian sitting beside her, his hand firmly holding hers.
The prosecution presented overwhelming evidence—the security footage from the hotel kitchen showing Michelle manually turning down the freezer temperature, the intercepted phone calls with Vanguard Holdings, and the forged loan documents.
When the judge called Ivy to the witness stand, a heavy hush fell over the courtroom.
Ivy walked up to the stand with quiet, unshakeable dignity. She took the oath, her voice steady.
"Miss Austin," the prosecutor asked, "do you believe your sister acted with malice when she locked your six-year-old son in the commercial freezer?"
Ivy looked across the courtroom at Michelle. For years, Michelle had terrorized her, beaten down her self-esteem, and made her feel worthless.
"I believe," Ivy spoke clearly into the microphone, "that my sister allowed jealousy and greed to turn her into a monster. She didn't just lock my son in a freezer; she tried to sell my family's peace for money."
Michelle glared at her from the defense table, spitting out venomously, "You think you’re better than me now, Ivy?! Just because you found a billionaire?! You’re still just trash from Queens!"
BANG! BANG!
The judge slammed his gavel down furiously. "Silence in the court! One more outburst from the defendant and I will have her removed!"
Ivy didn't flinch. She looked at Michelle with profound pity.
"I don't think I’m better than you, Michelle," Ivy said softly, her voice carrying through the quiet courtroom. "I just chose to love my children instead of hating the world. I forgive you for what you did to me. But I will never let you near my family again."
Two hours later, the jury returned with a unanimous verdict.
Guilty on all counts.

The judge sentenced Michelle Austin to fifteen years in state prison without the possibility of parole for the first ten years. As the guards cuffed Michelle and led her away through the side door, Michelle looked back at Ivy one last time, weeping in regret, but Ivy simply turned her face away, leaning her head against Brian’s shoulder.
The past was finally closed.
