Chapter 4 - The Mirage of Success

For two days, Daniel tried frantically to reach Claire.
Her phone line was disconnected. Her social media accounts were deleted. When he drove to their Bellevue home, he found two armed private security guards stationed at the front gate. They refused to let him enter, informing him that the property—which Claire had purchased outright with her personal trust before their marriage—was being packed up by professional movers.
Desperate, Daniel tried to go to the police, but the Bellevue Police Chief personally met him in the lobby, handed him a copy of the restraining order signed by a senior federal judge, and advised him in no uncertain terms to walk away before he ended up in a jail cell.
"She's playing games," Vanessa insisted that evening as they sat in Daniel’s luxury high-rise apartment. She poured him a glass of scotch, though her own eyes were darting nervously around the room. "She's using her family's name to scare you. So what if her father has money? You're the CEO of Cross Logistics now! The board ratified your position this morning!"
Daniel took a heavy gulp of the scotch, but the alcohol did not dull the sharp edge of panic clawing at his chest.
"You don't understand, Vanessa," Daniel muttered, staring at the floor. "You don't know who Charles Whitmore is. The man doesn't just sue people. He erases them."
"He can't touch Cross Logistics!" Vanessa said defensively, stepping behind his chair and rubbing his shoulders. "We have contracts with thirty major retail chains! We just closed the five-million-dollar credit line with Pacific First Bank! You are untouchable!"
Before Daniel could respond, his corporate phone began to ring.
The caller ID displayed the name of Julian Thorne, the Chief Financial Officer of Cross Logistics.
Daniel snatched the phone. "Julian? What is it? I told you I wasn't taking calls tonight."
"Daniel, you need to get to the office right now," Julian said, his voice laced with uncharacteristic panic. "Something is happening. Something catastrophic."
"What are you talking about?"
"Pacific First Bank just froze our operating line of credit," Julian stammered. "They issued a recall notice on our four-million-dollar equipment loan. They're demanding full payment within forty-eight hours!"
Daniel stood up so fast his chair overturned. "They can't do that! Our loan terms give us a ninety-day cure period for any default!"
"They invoked the material adverse change clause!" Julian shouted over the phone. "And that's not all, Daniel! Three of our largest shipping clients—Aegis Retail, Maritime Cargo, and Western Global—just sent formal notices terminating their contracts, effective immediately!"
Daniel felt the air leave his lungs. "On what grounds?"
"They aren't giving grounds! They're paying the contract termination penalties! Millions of dollars in penalties, Daniel! They're eating the cost just to sever ties with us before midnight!"
Vanessa watched Daniel’s face turn ashen. "Daniel? What's wrong?"
Daniel ignored her, clutching the phone with white knuckles. "Who is buying out those contracts, Julian? Who is paying their termination fees?"
There was a long, terrifying pause on the other end of the line.
"I just talked to the legal team at Western Global," Julian whispered, his voice trembling. "They said the buyout funds were wired directly from an escrow account owned by Whitmore Meridian Group."

The phone slid from Daniel’s ear.
The trap had been sprung.
