Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Execution

The grand conference room at the end of the hall was bathed in mid-day sunlight.

Daniel led his board members down the hallway with a restored bounce in his step. Behind him walked Vanessa, clutching her leather portfolio, already calculating how she could use this new capital to launch a fresh marketing campaign.

"Remember," Daniel whispered to Arthur Vance as they reached the double oak doors. "Let me do the talking. I'll make sure we retain operational control."

Daniel took a deep breath, plastered on his best executive smile, and pushed the heavy doors open.

Inside, sitting at the far end of the long glass conference table, sat three people.

On the left was Arthur Pendelton, immaculate in his charcoal suit. On the right was Marcus Vance, sitting silently with his arms crossed over his massive chest.

And sitting in the center chair—the primary executive leather throne—was Claire Elizabeth Whitmore.

She wore a striking crimson suit that accentuated her regal posture. A diamond necklace—a family heirloom that had belonged to her great-grandmother—glimmered at her throat. Her hands were calmly folded over a leather portfolio on the glass surface.

Daniel stopped dead in his tracks. The board members behind him bumped into his back, murmuring in confusion.

Vanessa gasped, her eyes widening in absolute horror. "Claire?!"

Daniel felt the blood drain entirely from his head. His breath caught in his throat like a block of ice. "Claire... what... what are you doing here?"

Claire did not smile. She did not raise her voice. She simply looked at Daniel with a pair of cold, clear eyes that held not a single trace of the woman he had known for three years.

"Good morning, Daniel," Claire said, her voice dropping into the room like heavy velvet. "Please, take a seat. We have business to discuss."

"This... this is a joke," Daniel stammered, looking frantically around the room at Arthur Pendelton and Marcus Vance. "You can't be here! You're... you're my ex-wife!"

"I am the Managing Partner of Aegis Heritage Holdings," Claire corrected him smoothly, tapping the document in front of her. "And as of ten minutes ago, Aegis Heritage purchased seventy-eight percent of the outstanding debt instruments of Cross Logistics from Pacific First Bank."

Arthur Vance, the board member, pushed past Daniel, his face pale. "Wait... you're the Whitmore heir?"

"I am," Claire said, offering Arthur Vance a brief, polite nod. "And I am the sole investor behind the buyout offer currently sitting in front of your CFO."

Daniel stumbled forward, leaning his hands on the glass table to keep from falling. "Claire... please. Talk to me privately. We can work this out! I know I made mistakes... I know I hurt you—"

"You didn't make mistakes, Daniel," Claire interrupted, her tone sharp as a razor. "You made choices. You chose a champagne dinner while I was in labor. You chose a mistress while your children were dying in an operating room. And now, I am making my choices."

She flipped open the leather portfolio.

"The terms of the Aegis Heritage acquisition are non-negotiable," Claire announced, addressing the board members who stood frozen behind Daniel. "We will inject twenty-five million dollars into Cross Logistics immediately. We will satisfy all bank debts and guarantee all employee salaries."

The board members looked at each other, stunned. It was an incredibly generous offer for the company—but not for Daniel.

"However," Claire continued, turning her sharp gaze directly onto her husband. "The acquisition is contingent upon three immediate conditions."

"What conditions?" Daniel whispered, dread settling deep in his belly.

Claire opened a secondary file and pushed three documents across the glass table.

"First: Daniel Cross is terminated from his position as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board, effective immediately, for gross negligence and breach of fiduciary responsibility."

Daniel gasped as if he had been punched in the chest. "You can't fire me! I built this company!"

"Second," Claire continued without pausing. "All stock options previously granted to Daniel Cross are canceled under the executive misconduct clause, which I personally had updated when Aegis acquired your debt."

"No... no!" Vanessa shrieked from the back of the room. "That's illegal!"

Marcus Vance shifted slightly in his chair, casting a deadly look at Vanessa that instantly silenced her.

"Third," Claire concluded, her voice ringing with absolute, icy authority. "Vanessa Cole is terminated from her position as Director of Client Relations. She will be escorted from the premises by security within five minutes, leaving behind all company property, including the corporate vehicle and credit cards."

Claire closed the folder with a soft, decisive thud.

"Sign the documents, gentlemen," Claire told the board members. "Or watch Cross Logistics enter liquidation bankruptcy by four o'clock today."

Arthur Vance didn't hesitate for a single second. He pulled a pen from his jacket, stepped past Daniel, and signed his name on the buyout agreement. One by one, the remaining board members stepped forward, signing away Daniel's company to save their own investments.

Daniel watched in silent, helpless horror as his entire life, his career, his status, and his pride were dismantled in front of his eyes in less than three minutes.

When the last board member finished signing, Arthur Pendelton gathered the papers and handed a pen to Claire. She signed her name in bold, elegant cursive across the bottom: Claire Elizabeth Whitmore.

She stood up, buttoning her red jacket.

"The meeting is adjourned," Claire said.
