Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Pretender

Ten minutes later, the lobby of Cross Logistics was filled with whispered rumors as security personnel lined the corridors.

Daniel stood in his former executive office, watching two private security guards pack his personal belongings into a plain cardboard box. His framed diplomas, his corporate awards, and his expensive crystal desk ornaments were dumped unceremoniously into the paper container.

Vanessa stood beside him, clutching her purse, her eyes red from crying.

"Daniel, do something!" Vanessa hissed, grabbing his arm. "Call a lawyer! You can sue her! She can't just take everything!"

Daniel looked at Vanessa, and for the first time in months, the scales fell from his eyes. He saw her not as the glamorous, sophisticated woman he had pursued, but as a shallow, mercenary creature who had only wanted the CEO of a successful firm.

"Sue her with what money, Vanessa?" Daniel said, his voice flat and dead. "My accounts are frozen. My stock is worthless. She owns the building we're standing in."

The office door opened.

Claire walked in, accompanied by Marcus Vance. She looked around the spacious office—the ocean view, the Italian leather sofas, the custom artwork—the luxuries Daniel had bought while complaining that they couldn't afford a nursery renovation at home.

"Your personal vehicle in the parking garage was leased under a corporate account," Claire noted mildly. "The keys have been deactivated. You will need to take a taxi."

Daniel stepped toward her, his posture broken, his eyes filled with a desperate, pathetic pleading.

"Claire... please," he begged, tears finally spilling down his cheeks. "I was wrong. I was blind! I was seduced by the power, by the title... I didn't realize what I was losing! Please, let me see my children. Let me be a father to Alexander and Charlotte."

Claire stared at him, her heart completely untouched by his tears.

"You had a chance to be a father, Daniel," she said softly. "You had a chance on a rainy Tuesday night when I begged you on the phone. You told me you didn't have time for a jealous interrogation. You told me to call an ambulance."

"I didn't know!" he sobbed. "If I had known—"

"If you had known I was a Whitmore?" Claire interrupted, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "If you had known I had billions behind my name, you would have come running. But because you thought I was just an ordinary woman—a wife who depended on you—you left me to die."

She took a step closer, looking into his hollow eyes.

"My children will know their father's name," Claire said quietly. "They will know that he was a man who traded his soul for a title he couldn't hold. But they will never, ever be raised by a coward."

She turned to Marcus Vance. "Escort Mr. Cross and Miss Cole out of the building."

"Claire!" Daniel screamed as Marcus grabbed his arm, dragging him toward the door. "Claire! Please! Give me another chance! Claire!"

His desperate cries echoed down the hallway, fading as the elevator doors closed, carrying him down to the street where he belonged.
