Chapter 5 - Whispering in the Dark

Nora woke up forty-eight hours later in the master suite of the Vale estate.

The room was bathed in the soft, warm glow of a bedside lamp. The smell of antiseptic was overpowered by the scent of fresh white roses filling every vase in the room. Her shoulder was tightly bandaged, aching with a dull, throbbing pain, but her mind was clear.

She turned her head slowly.

Dominic was sitting in an armchair right beside her bed. He hadn't changed his clothes in two days. His suit was wrinkled, dark stubble covered his jaw, and deep dark circles sat beneath his eyes. He was holding her uninjured hand tightly in both of his, resting his forehead against her knuckles.

"Dominic?" Nora whispered, her voice raspy.

Dominic snapped his head up instantly. When he saw her open eyes, a look of overwhelming relief washed over his face. He leaned forward, kissing her hands, her knuckles, her cheeks, his breath ragged.

"Thank God," he breathed, his voice trembling. "Thank God..."

"The kids..."

"They are downstairs," Dominic said softly, running his fingers gently through her hair. "They haven't left the house. Leo refused to go to school until he knew you were awake. They've been making you get-well cards all morning."

Nora smiled weakly, tears welling in her eyes. "Good."

Dominic looked down at her, his dark eyes brimming with a terrifying intensity of emotion. "Why did you do it, Nora? You took a bullet meant for my son. You could have died."

"They are my children, Dominic," Nora said clearly, looking straight into his soul. "I may not have carried them in my womb, but they are mine. I would give my life for them a thousand times over."

Dominic squeezed her hand. "You don't have to die for us, Nora. You're the one who brought us back to life."

He leaned down slowly, giving her time to pull away, but Nora didn't move. His lips met hers in a kiss that was slow, deep, and filled with months of unspoken longing, gratitude, and fierce devotion. Nora closed her eyes, melting into the warmth of his mouth, wrapping her uninjured arm around his neck.

When he finally pulled back, his forehead rested against hers, their breathing synchronized in the quiet room.

"I didn't just buy your father's debt to save you from Benny Shaw, Nora," Dominic confessed softly, his dark eyes shining with honesty. "I've known who you were for two years. I saw you at a charity gala in downtown Chicago. You were standing by yourself, looking so strong, so dignified, surrounded by people who didn't appreciate you. When I heard what your father was doing to you... I knew I had to bring you home."

Nora gasped quietly. "You... you knew?"

"I wanted you in my life, Nora. I wanted a mother for my children, but more than that... I wanted you."

Tears spilled over Nora's cheeks—not tears of sadness, but of profound healing. The wounds left by her family, her diagnosis, and her years of feeling defective vanished beneath the absolute certainty of his love.

"I love you, Dominic," she whispered.

"I love you, Nora," Dominic swore, kissing her forehead. "With every breath I have left."
