Chapter 9 - Miracles of the Heart

Six months had passed since the night Mercer Manor fell.

The city of Chicago was finally at peace. Dominic had completely dismantled the Mercer syndicate, absorbed their legitimate assets, and officially announced his retirement from all criminal operations, transferring control of his logistics firms into clean, legal corporate structures.

The Vale mansion was no longer a cold, gray fortress.

The walls were now painted in warm, cream tones, covered with framed photographs of Nora, Dominic, and the four children. The garden echoed daily with the sounds of laughter, running feet, and splashing water from the new swimming pool.

Leo was top of his class, Julian had won an young artists' award for his illustrations, and the twins were thriving in kindergarten.

It was a quiet Sunday morning. Nora was sitting at the vanity table in the master bedroom, brushing her hair, when a sudden wave of intense dizziness washed over her.

She gasped, dropping her hairbrush onto the carpet as her vision blurred.

Dominic, who was buttoning his shirt near the closet, rushed to her side instantly, kneeling beside her chair. "Nora! What's wrong? Is it your shoulder?"

"No... no, my shoulder is fine," Nora murmured, pressing a hand against her stomach, her face turning pale. "I just... I felt so nauseous all of a sudden. I've been feeling so tired lately."

Dominic's eyes filled with immediate concern. "I'm calling Dr. Vance right now."

An hour later, Dr. Vance—the family’s trusted private physician—finished examining Nora in the estate’s medical room while Dominic paced frantically outside the door.

When Dr. Vance stepped into the hallway, his face held a look of utter bewilderment and profound joy.

"Dominic... come inside," the doctor said, shaking his head.

Dominic rushed in, grabbing Nora's hand. "What is it? Is she sick? Is it an infection?"

Dr. Vance smiled warmly, handing Dominic an ultrasound scan. "Six years ago, a corrupt doctor at the Hayes family clinic misdiagnosed Miss Nora. The scarring was severe, yes, but after her shoulder surgery and the months of reduced stress and proper healing... her body restored itself."

Dominic stared at the paper, then looked at the doctor, his brain struggling to process the words. "What are you saying, Vance?"

"I am saying, Mr. Vale," Dr. Vance declared happily, "that Nora is eight weeks pregnant with a healthy single baby."

Silence descended upon the room.

Nora sat on the edge of the bed, tears streaming down her glowing face, clutching her stomach with shaking hands. "A baby... Dominic, we're having a baby..."

Dominic fell to his knees before her. The feared mob boss, the man who had faced down armies without flinching, buried his face into Nora's lap and wept like a child—tears of overwhelming gratitude, wonder, and joy.

"A miracle," Dominic sobbed softly, kissing her stomach over her sweater. "You gave us a miracle, my love."
