Chapter 4 - The Showdown on Northern Boulevard

By 11:30 a.m., the flagship store of Mercedes Auto Parts on Northern Boulevard was surrounded by a strange, tense quiet. The massive glass showroom windows, usually bright with displays of chrome wheels and high-end engine blocks, looked dark under the gray midday sky. Inside the main office, three senior store managers stood around the counter, their faces pale as they looked at the computerized inventory log that had been completely frozen from the central server in Chicago.

A silver town car pulled up to the curb, and Lucia stepped out, followed by Detective Marcus Vale of the Queens Fraud Squad and a tall, thin man in a charcoal suit named Mr. Henderson—Mrs. Mercedes’s personal estate attorney who had been out of the country until last night.

As they walked through the double glass doors, the bell chimed softly.

Javier was standing behind the counter, his tie pulled loose, his face bright red as he argued furiously with a young female bank representative on his cell phone. Brenda sat on the leather sofa in the waiting area, her white coat draped over her shoulders, her long nails clicking sharply against her phone screen as she looked at her blocked credit card statements.

"I don't care about the corporate compliance rider!" Javier screamed into the phone, slamming his hand against the counter when he saw Lucia step inside. "I am the only son! I’m the one who runs the logistics! Turn the servers back on!"

"The servers won't turn on for you, Javier," Mr. Henderson said, stepping forward and opening his leather briefcase with a deliberate, loud click of the metal latches. "I’ve just filed the formal forensic audit report with the State Attorney General’s Office. We have the full banking records for the Brooklyn dummy account registered to 'Brenda’s Luxury Aesthetics.' You’ve moved four hundred and twelve thousand dollars out of the company’s wholesale tire fund over the last six months."

Javier dropped his phone onto the desk, his eyes wide and bloodshot as he looked between the attorney and the detective. "Henderson... you’re supposed to be our family lawyer. My dad hired you!"

"Your dad hired me to protect the business he built with his wife, Javier," Henderson said, his voice cold and precise. "Not to help a thief steal from a woman who can't speak to defend herself. The corporate bylaws state clearly that any officer found guilty of asset diversion is immediately stripped of all shares and terminated for cause without a severance package."

Brenda stood up from the sofa, her face turning an ugly, tight shade of white. "Javier? What is he talking about? You told me you owned this building! You told me the bank accounts were yours as soon as the old lady kicked the bucket!"

"Shut up, Brenda!" Javier snapped, turning back to Lucia with a desperate, wild look in his eyes. "Lucia... please. We were married for eleven years. You know how hard I worked to keep this place running after Dad died. The stroke... it changed everything. I was stressed. I made mistakes. But we can fix this. We can go home. I’ll kick Brenda out right now. We can put Mom back in her room."

Lucia walked to the counter, looking down at the man she had spent a decade trying to love. She didn't feel anger; she didn't feel the old, exhausting grief that had kept her awake through so many long nights. She felt nothing but the clean, cold clarity of a nurse who had just removed a malignant growth from a patient.

"You didn't make mistakes, Javier," Lucia said, her voice carrying clearly to the managers standing in the back bay. "You made choices. You chose to leave your mother outside on a stretcher in the freezing rain because her illness was inconvenient for your girlfriend. You chose to call her a plant. Tonight, the plant is taking her roots back. Detective, he’s all yours."

Detective Vale stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Javier Herrera, you’re under arrest for grand larceny, corporate wire fraud, and elder financial exploitation. Put your hands behind your back."

Brenda let out a sharp, terrified shriek, grabbing her designer bag from the sofa and running toward the side exit before the second officer could close the door. Javier didn't run. He sank down onto the rolling office chair, his face turning the color of old paper as the steel rings clicked shut around his wrists, his empire of stolen grease and stolen money turning to smoke before the sun could even reach its peak.
