The morning light of July 2026 broke over the valley with a brilliant, untroubled clarity that turned the fields around the new Mercedes Foundation Rehabilitation Center in upstate New York into a sea of green clover and wild white lilacs.
The foundation, established using the recovered funds from Javier’s New Jersey salvage operation, was dedicated to providing free, high-tech neurological therapy and speech devices to stroke survivors from low-income families across the state.
Lucia stood on the wide granite steps of the main building, her arm wrapped securely around her sister Elena’s waist, while Mrs. Mercedes sat in the center of the terrace, surrounded by five young children who were practicing their eye-tracking boards under the supervision of two speech therapists.
