Chapter 9 - The Sovereign Spring

The evening sun dipped behind the Manhattan skyline, casting a long, spectacular golden light across the waters of the bay in Astoria. The garden terrace of Elena’s cottage was filled with the sound of low music and the laughter of twenty family friends who had gathered for a quiet celebration.

Lucia stood by the wooden rail, a glass of white wine held firmly in her hand, her face warm under the summer breeze. She was no longer the tired, anxious nurse who had spent her nights washing sheets in a dark apartment; her shoulders were relaxed, her skin bright, her eyes reflecting the calm, steady peace of a woman who had finally balanced her life’s accounts.

Mrs. Mercedes rolled up next to her, her chair moving smoothly over the bluestone pavers. She looked out at the river, her left hand reaching out to wrap her fingers around Lucia’s wrist.

The electronic voice spoke softly, its tone intimate and deep in the quiet twilight: “Thank you, my daughter. For not letting the plant wither.”

Lucia leaned down, pressing her forehead against the older woman’s silver hair, her tears finally falling—but they were warm, sweet tears born of pure, unadulterated survival. "You were never a plant to me, Meche. You were the roots. And the roots are what kept us alive through the storm."
