Chapter 10 - The Ring’s Promise

That evening, after the guests had departed and the stars began to twinkle in the clear, violet sky above the valley, the estate grew quiet.

A cool night breeze rustled through the apple trees, carrying the sweet scent of night-blooming jasmine into the master bedroom.

Grace was fast asleep in her wooden crib near the window, breathing softly, her tiny fist tucked under her chin.

Lana sat on the wide window seat, wearing a soft silk robe, looking out at the moonlight silvering the Hudson River.

Brennan walked into the room silently. He carried a small velvet jeweler’s box in his hand.

He walked over to the window seat and knelt down beside her on one knee—just as he had knelt in the rain five years ago, but now surrounded by warmth, peace, and absolute love.

"Brennan?" Lana looked at him, surprised.

Brennan opened the velvet box.

Inside sat a stunning, unadorned platinum band, handcrafted with flawless precision. Embedded along the inner curve of the ring were three tiny, brilliant blue sapphires—representing Lana, Brennan, and baby Grace.

"When I took Leo’s ring back from Arthur Sullivan," Brennan said, his voice deep, soft, and filled with intense emotion, "I swore that I would protect the justice he fought for."

He reached out, taking her right hand in his.

"You moved Leo's band to your right hand to honor the past," Brennan murmured. "And tonight, Lana... I want to give you this ring for our future. Not as a symbol of an empire. Not as a key to a vault. But as a promise that as long as I draw breath, you and Grace will never face the storm alone."

Lana looked down at the platinum band sparkling in the moonlight, then into the eyes of the man who had fought the world to give her a home.

Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness shimmered in her brown eyes.

"Yes, Brennan," Lana whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. "Yes."

Brennan carefully slipped the platinum band onto the ring finger of her left hand. It fit perfectly, warm against her skin.

He stood up, pulling her out of the window seat into his arms, kissing her deeply as the moonlight bathed the room in a gentle, silver glow.

Lana wrapped her arms around his neck, resting her head against his chest, listening to the strong, steady beat of his heart.

She looked down at her hands—on her right, the gold band that had exposed the dark secrets of the past and brought down a corrupt empire; on her left, the platinum band that bound her to a bright, beautiful future filled with love and protection.

She was no longer the forgotten widow in the rain.
