Chapter 4 - The Infiltration of Power

The glass-and-steel monolith of the Sullivan Enterprises Tower towered fifty stories over the Financial District. Usually, entering the building required three levels of biometric security, private keycards, and armed guards stationed in the lobby.

At 1:30 PM, three black SUVs pulled up directly into the building's executive loading bay, bypassing the front entrance entirely.

The bay doors had been forced open minutes earlier by Brennan’s logistics team, who had quietly disabled the building's private security grid using the master codes retrieved from Leo’s encrypted drive.

The heavy doors of the SUVs swung open. Brennan stepped out, flanked by eight armed men in sleek suits. Lana stepped out beside him, wearing a sharp black tailored suit Clara Mercer had provided for her, her dark hair pulled back in a neat, professional knot. Her jaw was still faintly bruised, but her posture was rigid, regal, and devoid of fear.

"The executive elevators are offline for the public," Viktor reported, checking his tactical tablet. "We control floors forty-five through fifty. Arthur and Beatrice are locked in the corner boardroom on fifty."

"Good," Brennan said smoothly. He looked at Lana, extending his arm. "Shall we?"

Lana took his arm, her heels clicking firmly against the polished concrete as they entered the private elevator bank.

Inside the fifty-floor boardroom, panic had turned into outright chaos.

Arthur Sullivan was screaming into his desk phone while his vice president, Donald Vance, frantically tried to pack physical hard drives into a leather courier bag. Beatrice sat in a leather chair, her face ash-white, staring at the television mounted on the wall.

Every major news network was running the same breaking banner:

“FEDERAL PROSECUTORS SEIZE SULLIVAN ENTERPRISE ASSETS IN MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR FRAUD AND SMUGGLING PROBE.” “ARREST WARRANTS ISSUED FOR ARTHUR AND BEATRICE SULLIVAN.”

"Why isn't the plane ready?!" Arthur shrieked into the phone. "I don't care about the flight plan! Get the private jet on the runway at Teterboro right now!"

The line suddenly went dead.

Arthur slammed the receiver down, sweat dripping from his forehead, soaking through his thousand-dollar shirt collar. "Vance! Where is Kasparov? Why hasn't he eliminated the girl yet?!"

Before Vance could reply, the heavy double oak doors of the boardroom exploded inward.

The heavy brass locks sheared off with a deafening crack, wood splintering across the marble floor.

Donald Vance pulled a concealed handgun from his shoulder holster, but before he could raise it, Viktor stepped into the room and fired a single taser round. The prongs struck Vance directly in the chest, delivering fifty thousand volts of electricity. Vance dropped to the floor like a sack of stones, twitching violently before going limp.

Beatrice shrieked, backing her chair into the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the city.

Arthur stumbled back against his massive mahogany desk, reaching for his own drawer where a pistol was kept.

"I wouldn't touch that drawer, Arthur," a smooth, chilling voice drawled from the doorway.

Brennan Hayes stepped over the splintered wood of the ruined doors. Behind him, looking completely serene, stepped Lana Gallagher.

Arthur stopped, his hand freezing inches from the bronze drawer handle. He looked at Lana, his eyes wide with a terrifying mix of hatred and pure, unadulterated shock.

"You..." Arthur rasped, his voice trembling. "How did you get in here? Security!"

"Your security team worked for your money, Arthur," Brennan said, casually walking over to the bar cart and pouring himself two fingers of scotch into a crystal tumbler. "My men work for me. There's a significant difference in loyalty."

Brennan took a sip of the scotch, then grimaced slightly, setting the glass down. "Cheap scotch. You always lacked taste."

"Lana, please!" Beatrice suddenly burst out, scrambling out of her chair, her hands clasped together in a desperate, pathetic gesture of supplication. "Lana, child, listen to us! We were grieving! We weren't in our right minds after Leo died! We made a mistake! We can work this out!"

Lana looked at her former mother-in-law. She remembered Beatrice standing under the crystal chandeliers twenty-four hours ago, sipping scotch while guards ripped Leo's ring from her finger and threw her into the rain.

"You called me a nurse," Lana said quietly, her voice cold and sharper than a surgeon's scalpel. "You called me a mistake. You said I came into this family with nothing, and I would leave with nothing."

Lana stepped closer to the mahogany desk. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, official legal document, slapping it down onto Arthur’s desk.

"That is a federal asset forfeiture order," Lana said. "Because the money used to build this tower was laundered through illegal port operations detailed on Leo's master drive, the government has seized the entire building. And as Leo's sole legal heir, the remaining clean assets of Sullivan Enterprises—including the estate in the Hudson Valley—have been legally transferred to me."

Arthur’s face turned bright red, veins bulging along his neck. "You miserable, scheming little bitch! Leo was my son! That fortune belonged to the Sullivan bloodline!"

"Leo hated you, Arthur," Lana replied, stepping right up to the desk, looking down at him. "In his final days, when he was gasping for air in that hospital bed, he didn't call for you. He didn't ask for Beatrice. He held my hand and begged me to tear your empire down so you could never hurt anyone else."

Sirens began to wail down on the street below—dozens of them, their blue and red lights flashing against the glass windows of the boardroom as federal agents and NYPD tactical units surrounded the building.

The door behind Brennan opened, and four Federal Agents wearing navy blue jackets with yellow FBI letters stepped into the room, guns drawn.

"Arthur Sullivan! Beatrice Sullivan!" the lead agent commanded. "Keep your hands where we can see them! You are under arrest for grand conspiracy, wire fraud, racketeering, and murder under federal indictment!"

Arthur dropped to his knees behind his desk, his hands slowly rising into the air, his eyes hollow and defeated.

Beatrice fell to the floor, sobbing hysterically as an agent pulled her arms behind her back and snapped cold steel handcuffs around her wrists.

As the agents hauled Arthur to his feet, he looked at Lana one last time, his mouth working silently, completely broken.

Lana didn't look away. She raised her left hand, adjusting the plain gold band resting on her finger, making sure Arthur saw it clearly in the bright afternoon light.

"Your son loved me, Arthur," Lana whispered as he was led past her in chains. "And his love just destroyed you."
