Chapter 3 - The Counterstrike

By 7:00 AM the following morning, the storm had cleared, leaving the city under a crisp, icy autumn blue sky.
Inside the corporate boardroom of Sullivan Enterprises on the top floor of the Financial District tower, Arthur Sullivan was screaming.
"What do you mean the court froze the probate file?!" Arthur roared, slamming his heavy leather briefcase onto the glass conference table. "I paid Finch two hundred thousand dollars to make sure that filing went through at 8:00 AM!"
Across the table, his corporate vice president and head of security, a hulking man named Donald Vance, looked pale.
"Finch vanished last night, sir," Vance reported quietly. "His wife says three men in suits picked him up from his house at midnight. His office was cleaned out. And forty minutes ago, the State Attorney General’s office issued a temporary injunction halting all asset transfers from Leo’s personal estate."
Beatrice Sullivan, sitting in a leather chair near the window wearing a dark silk suit, gripped her pearl necklace tightly. "It’s that girl. It’s Lana. She went to Hayes."
"Brennan Hayes is a gangster!" Arthur spat, pacing back and forth across the plush carpet. "Why would he care about a penniless nurse? What leverage does she have over him?"
"It doesn't matter why he's helping her," Beatrice said, her voice dropping into a venomous whisper. "What matters is what she knows. Arthur... what if Leo gave her something before he died? What if she has access to the secondary accounts?"
Arthur stopped pacing. A cold sweat broke out along his spine.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, dialing a private, unlisted number. He waited as it rang four times before a dark, distorted voice answered on the line.
"Sullivan," the voice rasped. "You're calling on a non-secure line."
"I need a clean-up," Arthur said through gritted teeth. "The widow. Lana Gallagher. She’s currently being sheltered by Brennan Hayes at his Manhattan penthouse."
There was a long pause on the line.
"Brennan Hayes?" the voice asked, a sudden edge of caution in the tone. "Touching Hayes costs ten times your usual rate, Arthur. He controls the eastern docks. If we move against his personal property, it starts a war."
"I will pay whatever you want!" Arthur hissed. "Five million dollars. Ten million! Just get her. Retrieve the gold band on her finger and make sure she never speaks to a prosecutor."
"Ten million," the voice agreed cold. "Fifty percent upfront to our offshore account in Zurich. It will be done by tonight."
Arthur hung up the phone, taking a deep, shuddering breath. He looked at Vance. "Wire the money from the port development fund instantly."
"Sir," Vance hesitated. "If the auditors are already looking at Leo's estate, moving ten million out of the development fund right now will trigger an automated flag at the Federal Reserve—"
"Do it!" Arthur roared. "If that girl lives to talk to the grand jury, there won't be a Sullivan Enterprises by the end of the week!"
Three miles uptown, inside a private conference room at the Hayes Legal Group offices, Lana sat across from a team of four top-tier defense and probate attorneys. Brennan sat at the head of the table, silently observing.
"Mrs. Gallagher," said the lead attorney, a sharp woman named Clara Mercer. "The drive you provided contains overwhelming evidence of corporate fraud, tax evasion, and forgery. We have already filed a formal complaint with the Department of Justice under the RICO act."
"How long until they arrest Arthur?" Lana asked.
"Normally, a federal investigation of this magnitude takes months," Clara explained. "However, Mr. Hayes has... expedited the process. By presenting the encrypted ledger directly to the Chief Federal Prosecutor this morning, we expect asset seizure warrants to be signed by noon."
Suddenly, the heavy oak door of the conference room swung open. Viktor, Brennan’s chief lieutenant, stepped inside, his expression grim. He walked over to Brennan and whispered something directly into his ear.
Lana watched Brennan’s face. His gray eyes hardened like dark obsidian.
"Are you sure?" Brennan asked Viktor quietly.
"Yes, boss," Viktor replied. "Our contacts inside the Swiss banking network just picked up a ten-million-dollar wire transfer originating from Sullivan Enterprises' port fund. It was routed to an account owned by the Shadow Syndicate—specifically, the mercenary crew led by Kasparov."
Clara Mercer gasped softly. "Kasparov? That's a high-level hit squad."
Lana felt a sudden chill run down her spine, but she kept her hands steady on the table. "Arthur hired hitmen."
Brennan slowly stood up, adjusting his silver cufflinks.
"Arthur just made his final mistake," Brennan said coldly. He turned to Viktor. "Where is the wire transfer being authorized from?"
"Arthur’s personal terminal at the Sullivan Tower," Viktor answered.
Brennan looked down at Lana. "It's time to end this. Put on your coat, Lana."

"Where are we going?" Lana asked, standing up.
"To Arthur's office," Brennan said, a cold, predatory smile touching his lips. "It's time for the widow to collect her inheritance."
