Chapter 5 - The Snake at the Gates

The kiss was slow, intense, and filled with a desperate, buried hunger that swept the breath from Claire’s lungs. Roman pulled her close against his broad chest, his arms wrapping around her waist like bands of iron, anchoring her to him.
When he finally pulled back, both of their breath came fast. Roman rested his forehead against hers, his eyes dark with intense emotion.
"I won't let anyone hurt you again, Claire," he murmured softly into the quiet hallway. "Not your father. Not Victor. No one."
"I know," she whispered, her hands resting against his dark lapels.
However, the peace they had built was short-lived.
Two nights later, the North Shore syndicate was rocked by a sudden, brutal attack. One of Roman’s primary shipping warehouses at the port was set on fire, resulting in millions of dollars in damages and three of his men hospitalized.
The arson bore a specific signature: a snake branded into the burned wooden crates.
Vincent Caruso—Claire’s former fiancé—and Victor Dane had formed an unholy alliance.
In the private study of Cade Manor, Roman stood before a massive glass map wall, surrounded by Elias, Silas, and his senior lieutenants. The mood in the room was black and deadly.
"Vincent Caruso is desperate," Elias explained, pointing at a map of Chicago’s port district. "His family's debt to the Italian cartels is coming due next month. He thought marrying Claire would secure the Whitcomb assets. When you took her and destroyed Warren Whitcomb, Caruso lost his bailout."
"And Victor Dane wants his pride back," Silas added grimly. "They're striking at our supply lines, trying to provoke a full-scale turf war before the Commission meets next week."
Roman stood in silence, his hands tucked into his trousers pockets, his face carved out of dark stone.
"They think I'm distracted," Roman said, his voice dropping an octave. "They think because I brought a woman into my house, I've gone soft."
"They're targeting Miss Whitmore's reputation, boss," Elias warned quietly, handing Roman a tablet. "Caruso released a statement to the syndicate council claiming you broke the old laws by taking a 'defective woman' as collateral without Commission approval."
Roman’s eyes flared with a terrifying, murderous heat. He shattered the tablet in his bare hand, the screen cracking under the sheer force of his grip.
"Assemble the heavy teams," Roman growled. "I want Caruso’s gambling dens closed by dawn. Every truck, every boat, every corner they control—burn it."
"Roman, wait," a quiet voice spoke from the shadows near the library doors.
Claire walked into the room. She was wearing an elegant, dark green dress, her hair pinned back, looking calm and authoritative.
The lieutenants immediately bowed their heads respectfully. Over the past month, every man in Roman’s inner circle had come to deeply respect Claire for the way she had transformed Roman’s household and brought life back to their grieving Don.
Roman turned to her, his jaw set hard. "Claire, go back upstairs. This is syndicate business."
"It's my business too," Claire said firmly, walking right up to the mahogany desk. "Vincent Caruso called me 'defective' to humiliate you, Roman. He wants you to act out of rage. He wants you to launch a blind attack so the Commission will judge you as unstable."
Roman’s eyes narrowed. "I don't care about the Commission, Claire. I care about destroying anyone who breathes your name in insult."
"Then destroy them smartly," Claire said, placing her hand over his bloody knuckles where the cracked glass tablet had cut his skin. She pulled out a handkerchief and gently wrapped it around his wound. "Vincent Caruso’s family business relies on three private offshore accounts held through the Whitcomb Financial Network. My father taught me how those accounts were structured."
Claire looked up at Roman, a cold, brilliant light in her eyes.
"I can freeze every dollar the Caruso family owns in under twelve hours," Claire said smoothly. "Without firing a single bullet."
Roman stared at her, stunned by her sharp intellect and icy resolve. The quiet, timid girl from the warehouse was gone, replaced by a ruthless syndicate queen protecting her Don.

A slow, dark smile spread across Roman’s features.
"Show me," Roman whispered.
