Chapter 8 - The Clearing of the Fog

By dawn, the police and syndicate cleanup crews had cleared the estate.
Vincent Caruso and Victor Dane were taken into federal custody under heavy guard, facing life sentences for attempted murder, kidnapping, and domestic terrorism—charges backed by mountains of digital evidence Claire had provided to the federal prosecutors.
Warren and Elaine Whitmore, stripped of all financial standing and public dignity, fled Chicago in disgrace, bankrupt and isolated from society.
In the master suite of Cade Manor, the soft morning light poured through the tall windows.
Claire sat on the edge of the large plush bed, wearing a soft white silk robe, holding a warm cup of chamomile tea. She looked tired, but her heart felt lighter than it ever had in her life.
The bedroom door opened softly, and Roman stepped inside.
He had changed out of his bloodied suit into a comfortable dark sweater and trousers. He looked at her, his eyes warm, filled with an intensity that made Claire’s breath catch.
He walked over, took the tea cup from her hands, placed it on the nightstand, and sat beside her on the bed.
"The children are asleep," Roman said softly. "Dr. Vance checked them all. No physical injuries. Just exhaustion."
"Thank God," Claire whispered.
Roman reached out, taking her soft hands into his large, calloused ones. He looked down at her fingers, tracing the small lines on her palm.
"Leo dropped that statue because he wanted to save you, Claire," Roman murmured, a proud smile touching his lips. "He told me downstairs that if anyone touched his 'new mom,' he’d drop a bigger statue next time."
Claire gasped softly, tears brimming in her eyes. "He... he called me his mom?"
Roman looked up, locking his dark eyes onto hers. "They all love you, Claire. But not as much as I do."
Claire froze, her heart hammering wildly in her chest. "Roman..."
"I loved Julianna," Roman said quietly, his voice filled with honesty and reverence for the past. "I grieved her for three years. I thought my heart was buried in the ground with her. But when I saw you in that dark basement... broken, discarded, yet standing so tall... something inside me woke up."
Roman slid down off the bed, dropping onto one knee before her.
Claire pulled her hand to her mouth, tears spilling over her eyelashes.
Roman reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, navy velvet box. He opened it, revealing a stunning, antique platinum ring featuring a rare, brilliant green emerald surrounded by delicate diamonds.
"This belonged to my grandmother," Roman said softly. "It represents rebirth, resilience, and eternal devotion. I didn't buy you three months ago, Claire. But today, I am begging you to accept everything I own, everything I am, and everything I will ever be."
Roman looked up into her gray-green eyes, his voice steady and rough with emotion.
"Will you marry me, Claire Whitmore? Will you be my wife, my queen, and the mother of my children?"
Claire didn't hesitate for a single second. She threw her arms around his broad neck, pulling him up into a fierce, breathless embrace.

"Yes!" she sobbed into his shoulder. "Yes, Roman! A thousand times, yes!"
Roman held her tight, lifting her slightly off the bed, kissing her lips, her cheeks, her forehead, as her soft laughter echoed in the quiet, sunlit room.
