Chapter 9 - The Miracle of Time

One year later.
Spring had fully arrived in Lake Forest. The gardens of Cade Manor were exploding with color—blooming peonies, white lilies, and lush green lawns stretching down to the sparkling blue waters of Lake Michigan.
The estate had been completely transformed. The heavy, dark gothic drapes were gone, replaced by light, airy linen curtains. Laughter echoed constantly through the grand hallways.
In the grand dining room, a massive celebration was taking place.
It was Lily’s fifth birthday.
The room was decorated with pastel balloons, soft music played, and a giant three-tiered chocolate cake sat in the center of the table.
Maya, now sixteen, was showing Claire her latest art portfolio—she had just been accepted into a prestigious summer art program in Paris. Julian was excitedly showing Roman his championship trophy from his junior fencing league, while Leo sat at the grand piano in the corner, playing a beautiful classical piece he had practiced for weeks just for Claire.
Claire sat at the head of the table, wearing a gorgeous yellow summer dress, her blond hair styled in soft waves. She looked radiant, healthy, and deeply happy.
Roman stood beside her chair, his hand resting lovingly on her shoulder, his thumb gently caressing her collarbone.
Dr. Vance, the family's private physician, walked into the dining room carrying a thin medical folder. She approached Roman and Claire with a strange, remarkably warm smile on her face.
"Claire, Roman," Dr. Vance said softly. "Your annual routine wellness scan results came back from the hospital. May I speak with you both in the study for a moment?"
Claire felt a sudden flare of quiet anxiety. Her old medical diagnosis always lingered in the back of her mind like a soft shadow.
Roman squeezed her shoulder. "Of course."
They walked into the quiet privacy of Roman’s study. Dr. Vance closed the heavy oak doors behind them.
"Is everything alright with Claire’s bloodwork?" Roman asked immediately, his voice protective.
Dr. Vance laughed—a warm, joyful sound. "Everything is more than alright, Roman. It's... well, in my forty years of practicing medicine, I have only seen this twice."
Claire frowned gently. "Dr. Vance, what do you mean?"
Dr. Vance pulled out an ultrasound scan from the folder and placed it on the desk before them.
"Three weeks ago, Claire mentioned she was feeling unusually fatigued and experiencing mild morning nausea," Dr. Vance explained softly. "We ran a full panel, assuming it was a hormonal shift. But I ordered an advanced pelvic ultrasound just to be certain."
Claire stared at the black-and-white image on the desk. She saw a small, round shape in the center of a darkened area.
Her breath completely stopped. "No..." she whispered, her hands flying to her mouth. "No, Dr. Langford said... the uterine scarring... the defect... I'm barren."
"Dr. Langford diagnosed you when you were severely malnourished, chronically stressed, and living under the intense emotional abuse of your parents," Dr. Vance explained gently, her eyes shining with tears. "Extreme trauma and severe stress can cause severe physical constriction and uterine lining atrophy that mimics permanent infertility."
Dr. Vance smiled warmly at Claire. "You spent a year in a home where you were safe, loved, nourished, and cherished. Your body healed, Claire. The tissue regenerated."
Dr. Vance pointed at the tiny white dot on the screen.
"You are fourteen weeks pregnant, Claire. With healthy, thriving twins."
Silence— absolute, stunned, breathless silence—filled the room.
Claire dropped her face into her hands and burst into hysterical, joyful tears.
Roman stared at the screen, then at Dr. Vance, his face completely pale, his hands shaking violently. The ruthless Don, the unyielding king of Chicago, dropped to his knees before Claire’s chair, pulling her hands away from her face, burying his head in her lap, weeping openly.

"A miracle..." Roman choked out, his voice broken with profound emotion. "My sweet, beautiful miracle..."
Claire wrapped her arms around his head, her tears dripping into his dark hair, holding him tightly.
