Chapter 2 - The Architect's Vault

While the hospital floor was transformed into an impenetrable fortress guarded by trusted union workers and private security hired directly by Marcus, Silas Vance was sitting in his glass office on the top floor of Vance Dynamics, sipping scotch with Odalys.

"You were too reckless," Silas said, though there was no real anger in his tone—only the cool calculation of a corporate predator. "Physically laying hands on her in a hospital room gives her leverage if she goes to the police."

"She won't go to the police," Odalys scoffed, adjusting her collar to hide a small scratch from the encounter. "She's terrified. And besides, the hospital board depends on your foundation for twenty percent of their operating budget. They’ll bury the incident if we threaten to pull funding."

Silas smiled, swirling the golden liquid in his glass. "Precisely. The separation agreement will be resigned by tomorrow. Once Wren surrenders her intellectual property rights to the Mark-IV hydraulic stabilizer, Kade Capital will approve the fifty-million-dollar credit line. We merge, clear the offshore debt, and cut her out completely."

The heavy oak doors to Silas’s executive suite suddenly swung open without a knock.

Silas’s chief legal counsel, Arthur Pendelton, burst into the room, his tie loosened, sweat shining on his forehead. He didn't look like a lawyer who was winning.

"Silas, we have a catastrophic problem," Pendelton panted, dropping a thick red folder onto the glass desk.

"Learn to knock, Arthur," Silas said smoothly. "Whatever it is, it can wait until the morning board meeting."

"It can't wait five minutes!" Pendelton shouted, throwing his hands in the air. "A cease-and-desist order was just served by the State Commerce Commission. Every single manufacturing plant producing the Mark-IV stabilizer has been shut down by local utility grids and equipment leases!"

Silas set his glass down sharply. "That's impossible. Vance Dynamics owns those manufacturing facilities."

"We own the buildings, Silas!" Pendelton snapped, his voice trembling. "We don't own the underlying industrial patents for the heavy automated machinery, nor do we own the land leases for the sub-station power lines supplying energy to those plants. They aren't held under Vance Dynamics. They are held under an independent shell trust called Osei Industrial Holdings!"

Silas’s face turned gray. "Marcus?"

"Her father," Pendelton confirmed, leaning over the desk. "Marcus Osei didn't just work as a mechanic forty years ago, Silas. He designed and patented the foundational hydraulic power-conversion units used in eighty percent of the midwest's manufacturing infrastructure. He leased them to your father for pennies on the dollar thirty years ago under a personal honor agreement. The moment Wren was attacked, Marcus revoked every single industrial lease."

Odalys stood up, her confidence suddenly faltering. "So what? It’s just a delay. We can sue him for breach of contract."

"You don't understand!" Pendelton yelled, turning on her. "Without those machine patents operational, Vance Dynamics is producing zero units! The Kade Capital merger hinges on our production capacity! If our factories are dark for more than forty-eight hours, the default clauses kick in, and our hidden debt of one hundred and twenty million dollars becomes instantly payable!"
