Chapter 10 - The Spring of Promise

A year had passed since the night of the accident on Riverside.

The spring in Oakwood was beautiful. The ancient oak trees were heavy with green leaves, and the gardens of Oakwood Manor were a riot of color—tulips, daffodils, and roses blooming in perfect harmony.

Claire stood in the garden, wearing a light yellow dress that fluttered in the warm breeze. Her hair was down, her face was clear, and her eyes were bright with a happiness that had been hard-won but was now permanent.

At her feet, Noah was crawling through the thick green grass, laughing as he chased a golden retriever puppy Richard had bought for him for his first birthday.

A small crowd of friends and colleagues were gathered on the patio. Among them was Victoria Vance, who was laughing with Aunt Evelyn; Harrison, who had become a close friend and business partner in Claire’s archival projects; and Marcus, the young resident doctor who had made the phone call that changed her life.

Richard walked out onto the patio, raising his glass to gather everyone’s attention.

"A toast," Richard said, his voice carrying over the garden. "To Claire. One year ago, she walked into this house with a broken arm, a bruised face, and a tiny baby in her arms. Today, she is the head of our historical preservation division, a homeowner in her own right, and the most incredible mother I have ever seen. To Claire and Noah—the future of the Holloway name."

"To Claire and Noah!" the crowd echoed, their glasses clinking in the warm afternoon air.

Claire looked around at the faces of the people who loved her—not for what she could do for them, not for the status she could bring them, but simply because of who she was.

She looked down at Noah, who had crawled over to her feet, pulling himself up by her dress to stand on his chubby legs. She bent down, picking him up with her strong, healed arms, lifting him high into the sunlight as he laughed.

Down the road, in a small, cramped apartment three miles away, Robert and Eleanor sat in silence, their television playing to an empty room, their golden child having long since stopped calling them because they no longer had any money to give her.

But up on the ridge, in the historic heart of Oakwood, the lights of the manor were bright, the laughter was real, and Claire Holloway was finally, beautifully, sleeping in a bed of her own making.
