Chapter 6 - The Bitter Harvest

Over the next two weeks, the suburban paradise Robert and Eleanor had built began to rot from the inside out.

The news of the frozen business accounts leaked to the local business community. Robert’s small architectural firm, already struggling due to his mismanagement and the diversion of funds to Whitney’s lavish lifestyle, began to lose clients. Contractors refused to work with him without upfront cash payments, which he did not have.

To make matters worse, Harrison Vance’s father, a man who valued reputation above all else, caught wind of the trust fund lawsuit.

It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon when Harrison himself showed up at the Oakwood estate. He hadn't come to see Robert or Eleanor. He had requested to speak with Claire.

Richard allowed the young man into the sunroom, where Claire was sitting with Noah, her arm still in the sling but her face looking remarkably better.

"Claire," Harrison said, his face pale and his usual confident posture slumped. He sat opposite her, looking down at his hands. "I... I wanted to apologize. I didn't know. Harrison’s father... my family... we were told that you were the one who cut contact, that you were estranged because of some personal issues."

"My father told you that to protect his own image, Harrison," Claire said quietly. "He didn't want you to know he was using my inheritance to pay for the engagement dinner you attended."

Harrison closed his eyes, a deep sigh escaping him. "The wedding is off, Claire. My father called off the merger of our families' business interests this morning. When I confronted Whitney about the trust fund, she didn't even deny it. She just screamed at me, saying it was 'family money' and that you were trying to ruin her life. She... she’s not the person I thought she was."

Claire felt a strange mixture of satisfaction and sadness. "I’m sorry, Harrison. I know you loved her."

"I loved the version of her she showed me," Harrison said, looking up at Claire with a sincere, painful honesty. "But seeing what they did to you... what they left you to deal with alone... it’s monstrous. If my father hadn't found out from Victoria, we would have married into that. I’m glad we didn't."

He stood up, looking down at Noah, who was sleeping peacefully in his bassinet. "If there’s anything you need, Claire. Any help with the baby, or with your recovery... my family wants to make things right. Victoria is going to ensure you get every single dollar back from that trust, even if we have to personally buy your father's business out of bankruptcy to do it."

"Thank you, Harrison," Claire said. "But my Uncle Richard is already handling the business side of things. Just take care of yourself."

As Harrison left, Claire looked out the window. The rain was washing away the dust of the winter, preparing the ground for spring. The old life she had known was completely gone, but the new one was taking root in the fertile soil of Oakwood.
