Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Golden Child

The panic in the conference room was palpable. Robert stared at the documents, his breath coming in short, ragged gasps. He looked at Eleanor, who was now clutching her designer purse as if it could save her from bankruptcy.

"Richard, please," Robert whispered, the arrogance completely gone from his face. "We don't have eighty thousand dollars. The business... we’ve been struggling. The engagement dinner cost us twenty-five thousand alone. We’re extended to the limit."

"Then you shouldn't have spent money that didn't belong to you," Claire said, her voice devoid of pity. "You told me I made my own bed, Dad. Well, this is yours. It’s time to lie in it."

"Claire, you can't do this to your sister!" Eleanor cried, reaching across the table. "Harrison’s family... they are very traditional. If they find out about this, if we lose the house, the wedding will be off! Whitney’s life will be ruined!"

"And what about my life?" Claire asked, her voice finally rising, the raw emotion of the last year spilling out. "What about Noah's life? When I was lying in that ditch on Riverside, with my car crushed around me, all I could think about was who would protect my son. And when I called you, my own father, you told me to figure it out because it was Whitney's night. You didn't care if we lived or died as long as the champagne was cold."

Whitney stood up, her eyes wild with fury. "You’re doing this on purpose! You’ve always hated me because I’m the pretty one! I’m the successful one! You’re just a bitter, single mother who wants to drag me down to your level!"

Slap.

The sound echoed through the high-ceilinged room.

Aunt Evelyn had stood up, her hand still raised, her face a mask of cold, maternal fury. Whitney stumbled back, holding her cheek, her eyes wide with shock.

"Do not ever speak to your sister like that again, you spoiled, useless little brat," Evelyn hissed, her voice vibrating with a power that made even Robert shrink back. "You have spent your entire life consuming everything Claire worked for. You are not pretty, Whitney. You are hollow. And Harrison Vance is going to find that out sooner rather than later."

Robert’s lawyer stood up, grabbing his briefcase. "I... I cannot represent you in this, Robert. This is a criminal matter of trust fund conversion. I suggest you find a criminal defense attorney." He turned and practically ran out of the room.

Robert slumped into his chair, his face buried in his hands.

"Thirty days, Robert," Richard said, standing up and buttoning his coat. "The clock is ticking. And don't bother trying to transfer your assets. My team has already secured an injunction freezing your business accounts pending a full forensic audit."

As they walked out of the conference room, Claire looked back one last time. Her father looked old, defeated, and small. Her mother was frantically trying to comfort a sobbing Whitney, whose diamond ring suddenly looked very heavy and very cold.

For the first time in eleven years, Claire felt the heavy, suffocating weight of her family’s expectations lift from her shoulders. She looked down at Noah, who was looking up at her with his bright, curious eyes, and she smiled.

They were going to be okay.
