Chapter 5 - The Proposal

Elena looked at me, surprised. "A proposal, Mr. Luca?"
"I am establishing the Sterling-Luca Foundation," I explained, pulling a leather binder from my drawer and opening it before her. "It is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing safe housing, legal protection, and employment opportunities for single mothers in crisis across the state."
Elena read the heading on the document, her eyes wide.
"I need an Executive Director," I continued, looking her dead in the eye. "Someone who understands the reality of what these women face. Someone who has the empathy, resilience, and strength to lead this organization with real integrity. Not a corporate bureaucrat who views human suffering as a line item on a spreadsheet."
Elena gasped, pointing a hand at her own chest. "Me? Mr. Luca... I was a housekeeper! I don't have a business degree!"
"My mother scrubbed floors for twenty years, Elena," I said, my voice rich with conviction. "She had more intelligence, character, and practical wisdom than ninety percent of the board members I deal with on Wall Street. You managed to raise a brave, compassionate child while working eighteen-hour days and dealing with a predatory manager. You have every qualification that matters."
"Mr. Luca..." she stammered, overwhelmed.
"The job includes a competitive salary, a private office in the city, full benefits, and educational sponsorship for Nora," I added. "And until you find a permanent home in the city, the West Cottage on this estate is vacant. It has three bedrooms, a private garden, and a kitchen. It is yours if you want it."
Elena stared at me, completely speechless. Tears spilled over her eyelashes, tracing wet paths down her cheeks, but this time, her shoulders were light, free from the crushing weight of fear.
Nora looked up from her drawing, seeing her mother cry. She immediately reached up with her tiny thumb and wiped a tear from Elena’s cheek.
"Don't cry, Mama," Nora whispered softly. "Mr. Luca said we have a home now."
Elena pulled her daughter tightly into her arms, burying her face in Nora’s dark curls, sobbing with profound, overwhelming gratitude.

"I will take the job, Mr. Luca," Elena sobbed, looking up at me through her tears with a radiant, beautiful smile. "I swear on my life, I will make this foundation save thousands of people."
"I know you will, Elena," I smiled warmly, standing up to shake her hand. "I know you will."
