Chapter 6 - The West Cottage

Two weeks later, the transition was complete.
The West Cottage—a historic stone home located on the sunlit edge of the estate’s property, surrounded by blooming hydrangeas and ancient oak trees—had been fully restored, furnished, and decorated for Elena and Nora.
For the first time in her life, three-year-old Nora had her own bedroom. The walls were painted a soft, warm cream, filled with white wooden furniture, plush toys, and a large window overlooking the rose garden.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, I walked down the gravel path toward the cottage, carrying a small wooden box under my arm.
As I approached the porch, I heard the sound of laughter—genuine, carefree laughter—echoing from the garden.
Elena was standing near a wooden picnic table, wearing a simple sundress, her hair tied back in a ribbon, setting down a pitcher of fresh lemonade. Nora was running through the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Mrs. Gable had adopted for the estate grounds.
When Nora saw me walking down the path, her face lit up with a brilliant smile.
"Mr. Luca!" she shouted, abandoning her chase and running across the lawn as fast as her small legs could carry her.
I caught her as she threw herself into my arms, lifting her high into the air as she giggled with pure joy.
"Look at you," I laughed, setting her back down on her feet. "You're getting too fast for me."
"I have my own room!" Nora declared proudly, grabbing my hand and trying to pull me toward the cottage. "Come see my bed! It has a pink blanket!"
Elena walked over, wiping her hands on an apron, her face glowing with health and happiness. "Mr. Luca, welcome. Please, sit down. I just baked an apple tart."
"Thank you, Elena," I said, sitting down at the wooden picnic table under the shade of the oak tree.
I set the small wooden box I was carrying onto the table.
"What's that?" Nora asked, climbing onto the wooden bench beside me, her curious brown eyes fixed on the box.
"This is for you, Nora," I said gently, pushing the box toward her.
Elena looked at me curiously as Nora carefully lifted the brass latch and opened the lid.
Inside the box lay a pristine, beautifully handcrafted blue wool rabbit with black button eyes—an exact, masterwork replica of an antique toy, made by a master artisan in the city.
Nora gasped, her hands hovering over the soft wool. "A bunny!"
"He's a special bunny, Nora," I told her, my heart swelling as she lifted the toy out of the box and hugged it tightly against her chest. "His name is Barnaby. He's going to stay in your room, and whenever you feel scared or worried about anything, you just tell him, and he’ll keep the bad dreams away."
Elena covered her mouth with her hand, her eyes shining with soft emotion as she watched her daughter press her face against the soft wool toy.

"Thank you, Mr. Luca," Nora whispered, holding the rabbit close. "I love him."
"You're very welcome, Nora," I replied softly, reaching out to gently pat her curly hair.
