Chapter 9 - The Grand Gala

One year after the day I found Nora in the laundry room.
The grand ballroom of the Luca Estate was illuminated by thousands of glowing candles, crystal chandeliers, and magnificent floral arrangements of white roses and gold orchids.
Over four hundred guests—city leaders, international philanthropists, business partners, and community members—gathered to celebrate the first anniversary of the Sterling-Luca Foundation.
The event had raised over fifteen million dollars in a single evening to expand housing programs nationwide.
At the center of the stage stood Elena.
She looked stunning in an elegant, floor-length emerald green gown, her dark hair swept up in a delicate knot, wearing a simple diamond pendant I had given her for her birthday. She spoke to the crowd with effortless grace, sharing stories of the lives transformed by the foundation’s work over the past year.
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause as she concluded her speech, standing up to give her a well-deserved standing ovation.
When she walked down the stage steps, I met her at the bottom, holding two glasses of sparkling champagne.
"You were incredible tonight," I said, handing her a glass and smiling warmly.
"I couldn't have done a single second of it without you, Luca," she replied softly, clinking her glass against mine.
From across the ballroom, Mrs. Gable walked over, holding little four-year-old Nora by the hand. Nora was wearing a adorable white lace dress, holding her beloved blue rabbit, Barnaby, under her arm.
"Look, Mr. Luca!" Nora giggled, showing me her small silver shoes. "I can dance like a princess!"
I crouched down, laughing as she spun around in a circle, her lace skirt flaring out around her knees. "You look like the prettiest princess in the entire world, Nora."
She stepped closer, placing her small hands on my knee, looking up at me with those big brown eyes that had changed my life forever.
"Mr. Luca?" she asked quietly.
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Are you going to stay with us forever?"
The entire room seemed to go quiet around us. I looked up at Elena, who was standing beside me, her breath catching in her throat, her brown eyes shining with soft hope.
I took a deep breath, reaching into my jacket pocket, and pulled out a small velvet box I had carried with me all evening.
I stood up slowly, looking directly into Elena’s eyes, and dropped to one knee on the polished dance floor.
The grand ballroom fell completely silent as four hundred guests gasped in surprise.
"Elena," I said, my voice thick with emotion, opening the velvet box to reveal a breathtaking, flawless yellow diamond ring surrounded by platinum leaves. "One year ago, a brave little girl walked into my life and taught me how to feel again. And her incredible mother showed me what true love, strength, and grace really look like."
Tears streamed down Elena’s cheeks as she covered her mouth with both hands.
"I spent my whole life searching for a place where I belonged," I whispered, tears shining in my own eyes. "And I found it with you and Nora. Will you do me the honor of marrying me, Elena? Will you let me be a father to Nora, and your husband for the rest of my days?"
Elena fell to her knees in front of me, throwing her arms around my neck, pulling me into a deep, passionate embrace.
"Yes, Luca! Yes!" she sobbed happily into my neck. "A thousand times yes!"

The grand ballroom erupted into wild, cheering applause, church-like music filling the air as our friends and guests celebrated our love.
Nora threw her arms around both of our legs, giggling happily. "Yay! We're a family now!"
