Chapter 6 - DESPERATE RETALIATION

Deprived of their financial pipeline and facing mounting criminal charges, my mother and sister grew increasingly desperate. A week before the preliminary hearing, Melissa managed to secure temporary bail through a high-interest bail bondsman, using her luxury jewelry as collateral.
Instead of keeping a low profile, Melissa immediately turned to social media to launch a smear campaign against me.
She posted a tearful ten-minute video on Facebook and TikTok, claiming that I was an abusive, unstable father who had abandoned my son to work in Alaska, and that I was now "framing" an elderly mother and a loving aunt to steal their inheritance.
The video quickly gained local traction, racking up thousands of views and angry comments from uninformed local residents.
“What kind of monster puts his own mom in jail?!” one comment read. “He abandoned his kid for work and now wants to act like a hero!” read another.
On Tuesday morning, I was sitting on the front porch when a white government sedan pulled into the driveway. Two representatives from Child Protective Services (CPS) stepped out, holding official clipboards.
"David Miller?" the lead agent, a stern woman named Mrs. Vance, asked.
"Yes," I answered, standing up.
"We received an anonymous emergency report alleging child abandonment, psychological abuse, and environmental endangerment regarding your son, Ethan Miller," Mrs. Vance said professionally. "We are required by state law to conduct an immediate home inspection and interview the child."
I didn't panic. I didn't get angry. I simply gestured toward the open front door.
"Come on in, officers," I said smoothly. "I’ve been expecting you."
I guided Mrs. Vance and her colleague into the house. They inspected every room—noticing the pristine, newly remodeled kitchen, the stocked refrigerator, the clean living space, and finally, Ethan’s bedroom.
Ethan was sitting on his bed, reading a book.
Mrs. Vance sat down gently on a chair opposite him, giving him a warm, gentle smile. "Hi Ethan. My name is Mrs. Vance. Can I ask you a few questions about your home?"
Ethan looked at me nervously. I gave him an encouraging nod. "It's okay, Ethan. Just tell the lady the complete truth."
For the next twenty minutes, Mrs. Vance interviewed Ethan privately. She asked about his meals, his sleeping arrangements, his time with Grandma, and how he felt living with me.
When Mrs. Vance emerged from the room, her stern expression had been replaced by a look of profound anger—not toward me, but toward the person who had filed the report.
"Mr. Miller," Mrs. Vance said, pulling out a tablet. "Your son just gave a detailed, articulate account of his time in that storage unit. He confirmed that your mother locked him out during the day and forced him to sleep outside. Furthermore, your house is in flawless condition."
"I have something else for you, Mrs. Vance," I said, handing her a folder. "Here are the certified medical records from St. Jude Children’s Hospital, the police reports, the hidden camera video footage, and a printout of the social media campaign my sister launched yesterday."
Mrs. Vance reviewed the documents, her jaw tightening.
"This report was filed by your sister, Melissa, wasn't it?" Mrs. Vance asked.
"Yes," I replied. "She tried to use CPS as a weapon to retaliate against me for pressing criminal charges."
"Filing a false CPS report is a state crime, Mr. Miller," Mrs. Vance declared firmly. "I am submitting a formal finding of Unfounded and Malicious Reporting directly to the District Attorney's office today. Your sister just added another felony charge to her docket."
I escorted the CPS agents to the door. As Mrs. Vance stepped onto the porch, she turned back to me.

"You're doing a fantastic job with your son, Mr. Miller," she said warmly. "He loves you very much."
"Thank you, Mrs. Vance," I smiled. "He's my entire life."
