Chapter 9 - THE FINAL COLLAPSE OF THE LEECHES

Six months after the trial, life had settled into a perfect, peaceful rhythm.

One afternoon while working at my shop, Marcus Vance dropped by carrying a small envelope.

"Hey David," Marcus greeted, watching me finish a weld on a custom iron gate. "Got a quick update for you regarding your former family."

I turned off the blowtorch, pulled off my welding mask, and wiped my brow with a towel. "What's going on, Marcus?"

"Your mother’s appeal for early parole was officially denied yesterday," Marcus reported, leaning against a workbench. "The appellate judge cited the extreme cruelty of the offense and upheld her full eight-year sentence."

"And Melissa?" I asked.

"Melissa was transferred to a minimum-security facility to serve out her remaining four years," Marcus continued. "Her daughter, Chloe, was officially placed in the permanent legal custody of her biological father, who moved her out of state to start a new life away from the drama. Melissa’s car and luxury belongings were completely liquidated to pay off her outstanding debts and legal fees."

I took a deep breath, setting my tools down. "Do they ever try to send letters?"

"Your mother tried to send two letters from prison to Ethan," Marcus said, pulling two sealed envelopes from his pocket. "As his legal guardian and trustee, I intercepted them as per the court's permanent restraining order. Do you want to read them?"

I took the envelopes, looked at my mother’s familiar handwriting on the front, and tossed them straight into the scrap metal incinerator bucket in the corner of the shop.

"No," I said calmly. "There’s nothing in those letters that I need to hear."

Marcus chuckled softly, shaking his head in admiration. "You really are a free man, David."

"I was never trapped, Marcus," I said, looking out the shop window at the bright afternoon sunshine. "I was just waiting for the right moment to protect my son."

That evening, I closed up the shop early and picked Ethan up from his soccer practice. Watching him run across the green field with his teammates, kicking the ball, laughing, and shouting with boundless energy, I knew that every battle, every court date, and every dollar spent had been worth it a thousand times over.

The leeches who had tried to drain our lives were gone, buried under the weight of their own greed and malice. And in their place, a strong, unbreakable foundation had been built.
