Chapter 3 - The Bail Hearing Shockwave

At 9:00 AM the following morning, Courtroom 302 of the Municipal Justice Center was packed with reporters, city attorneys, and curious onlookers.

Word had leaked to the local press about an insurance executive recording his wife abusing his sick mother, but the media didn't yet know about the multi-million-dollar land conspiracy.

Gwendolyn sat at the defense table in a yellow orange jumpsuit, her hair unwashed, her wrists hand-cuffed. Standing beside her was Victor Blake—a high-priced criminal defense attorney known for representing high-society criminals.

At the prosecution table sat District Attorney Mark Ramirez, accompanied by Julian Vance and Lucas Weaver.

Judge Beatrice Hayes, a tough, no-nonsense veteran magistrate, presided over the bench.

"Your Honor," defense attorney Victor Blake began, stepping up to the podium with an arrogant, smooth smile. "My client, Mrs. Gwendolyn Weaver, is a respectable community member with no prior criminal record. The allegations made against her are the result of a heated domestic dispute blown out of proportion by an emotionally overwhelmed husband. Mrs. Weaver has been acting as a full-time caregiver for an elderly woman suffering from severe vascular dementia. The bruised skin is a common symptom of fragile blood vessels in stroke patients."

Gwendolyn put on a tragic, tearful face, dabbing her dry eyes with a tissue. "I tried so hard, Your Honor... I gave up my life to care for her..."

"Your Honor," DA Ramirez interrupted, standing up. "The State requests that bail be denied entirely. Mrs. Weaver poses an immediate threat to the victim and is a extreme flight risk."

"Flight risk?" Victor Blake scoffed loudly. "On what grounds? She has no foreign assets, no—"

"Your Honor, if I may," Julian Vance said, stepping forward with permission from the DA. He placed a heavy tablet onto the clerk’s desk, connected to the courtroom's large overhead monitors. "We submit State’s Exhibit A: Video evidence recorded by Mr. Lucas Weaver at 4:20 PM yesterday, along with medical intake reports from Mount Sinai Hospital."

Julian pressed a button.

The large monitors in the courtroom flared to life.

The crystal-clear video played. The entire courtroom heard Gwendolyn’s sharp, vicious voice reverberate off the high ceiling: “Just swallow the soup already, you useless old woman, or I’ll dump it all over you!”

The screen showed Gwendolyn roughly grabbing Florence’s bruised face, forcing her mouth open, and the visible terror in the old woman’s eyes.

Gasps rippled through the gallery. Several reporters covered their mouths in horror.

"Turn that off!" Victor Blake demanded, his face turning pale.

"Silence in the court!" Judge Hayes barked, her eyes fixed on the screen in absolute disgust.

Julian didn't stop. He flipped to the next exhibit: photos of the black bag filled with dozens of unopened, hidden medication bottles, followed by high-resolution photos of the fingerprint bruises covering Florence’s neck, shoulder, and arms.

"Furthermore, Your Honor," Julian’s voice echoed like thunder, "this was not an overwhelmed caregiver. This was an attempted homicide for financial gain. We have uncovered forged conservatorship documents linking Mrs. Weaver to a fraudulent transfer of a fourteen-million-dollar commercial land trust owned by the victim’s family."

Gwendolyn’s head snapped toward her attorney in total panic. "Victor! Do something!"

The gallery erupted into shouting. Reporters began furiously typing on their laptops.

In the second row of the spectator gallery, a tall man in a dark tailored suit—Harrison Sterling himself—quietly stood up, adjusted his silk tie, turned his back on Gwendolyn, and walked swiftly out the rear doors of the courtroom.

Gwendolyn saw him leave. Her face drained of all color. "Harrison! Wait! Harrison!"

Judge Hayes slammed her gavel down with a deafening CRACK.

"Bail is DENIED," Judge Hayes ruled, her eyes glaring down at Gwendolyn with icy contempt. "Defendant will remain in custody at the County Correctional Facility pending trial for attempted murder, felony elder abuse, and grand larceny. Officers, remand the prisoner!"

As the guards grabbed Gwendolyn’s arms to drag her away, she began screaming frantically, kicking her legs against the floor.

"Lucas! Lucas, please! It was Harrison! Harrison forced me to do it! He told me he’d ruin me if I didn't get her to sign the land papers! Lucas, help me!"

Lucas stood beside Julian, watching his wife being dragged through the side door into the holding cells. He felt no triumph, no pleasure—only a cold, clear realization that the battle had just begun.

He looked back at the swinging doors where Harrison Sterling had just fled.

"He's running," Lucas whispered.

"Let him run," Julian replied, pulling out his cell phone. "The higher they climb, the harder they fall."
