Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail of Greed

Following the bail hearing, Lucas returned to his home on Willow Street—or what was left of it.

Accompanied by Julian Vance and a team of forensic accountants appointed by the state, Lucas began a complete search of the house to uncover how deep Gwendolyn and Harrison Sterling’s net of corruption went.

The house felt eerie and cold. The pastries Lucas had bought two days ago still sat dried out on the dining table. The crackle of paper around the dead flowers sounded like brittle bone.

"Check her private office upstairs," Julian instructed the forensic team. "Look for bank statements, secondary phones, safe deposit box keys, or encrypted hard drives."

Lucas walked into the master bedroom—the room he had shared with Gwendolyn for three years. Looking at the bed, the matching vanity, and her expensive designer clothes hanging in the walk-in closet, he felt a wave of nausea. Every gift he had bought her, every vacation they had taken, had been funded by his hard-earned money while she was systematically starving his mother in the back room.

He opened her vanity table drawer. Behind a collection of expensive perfumes, he found a small, hidden velvet box.

He opened it. Inside wasn't jewelry.

It was a small metallic USB drive and a safety deposit box key registered to Merchants National Bank, Box 408.

"Julian! In here!" Lucas called out.

Julian walked in, taking the USB drive with gloved hands. He plugged it into his portable laptop.

The drive was password-protected, but Gwendolyn wasn't a computer expert. The security hint was “My mother’s maiden name.”

Julian typed it in. The drive unlocked.

Dozens of audio files, scanned documents, and email threads popped up on the screen.

Julian opened an audio recording dated four months ago. He pressed play.

Gwendolyn’s voice came through the laptop speakers, talking to a man with a deep, authoritative tone—Harrison Sterling.

“She’s taking too long to sign, Harrison,” Gwendolyn’s voice said on the tape. “The old woman is stubborn. Every time I bring up the land papers, she asks for Lucas.”

“Then stop letting Lucas see her alone,” Harrison Sterling’s voice replied coldly. “Slow down her medication. Make her weak. When she’s confused enough, hold her hand and press her thumb to the notary page. The developers at Titan Holdings are offering fourteen million cash for Parcel 4B. They want the title cleared by July. If we don't deliver, the deal falls through.”

“What about Lucas?” Gwendolyn asked. “He’s starting to ask why his mother looks so pale.”

“Lucas is a mid-level insurance clerk,” Harrison scoffed with chilling condescension. “He’s gullible. Tell him it’s progress of her stroke. Give him some story about emotional fatigue. Once the land title is transferred to our shell corporation in Delaware, we’ll divorce him, take half his house, and leave him with the old woman’s medical bills.”

Lucas stood frozen, listening to his own life being auctioned off like garbage.

"They recorded their own conspiracy," Julian said, his eyes wide with astonishment. "Gwendolyn was keeping leverage on Harrison in case he tried to double-cross her on her cut of the fourteen million!"

"She wasn't just abusing my mother," Lucas said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "She was executing a corporate hit."

"This tape changes everything," Julian said, unplugging the drive. "This isn't just a domestic crime anymore. This is racketeering, conspiracy to commit murder, and federal fraud. Harrison Sterling can't buy his way out of this."

At that moment, Lucas’s phone chimed with a text message from an unknown number.

He looked at the screen.

“Mr. Weaver. Meet me at the Grand Hotel lobby in thirty minutes. Alone. If you want your mother to stay safe in that hospital, you will come.”

Lucas showed the text to Julian.

Julian’s face hardened. "Harrison Sterling is desperate. He knows the net is closing."

Lucas pulled his coat off the chair. "I'm going."

"Not alone," Julian said, pulling a tiny wireless microphone from his pocket and pinning it beneath Lucas’s collar. "You walk in there, keep him talking, and let us record every single word."
