Chapter 7 - The Healing Room

Three weeks later, Florence Weaver was officially discharged from Mount Sinai Hospital.

She didn't return to the dark, drafty house on Willow Street. Lucas had immediately put that house up for sale, refusing to ever set foot inside the place where his mother had suffered so much.

Instead, Lucas used a small advance from the property trust to rent a sunlit, beautiful two-story cottage near the botanical gardens on the south side of the city.

The cottage had wide glass windows, a wrap-around porch, a garden filled with yellow roses, and high-tech medical assistance equipment installed for Florence’s comfort. Lucas hired two certified, highly recommended professional nurses—vetted personally by Dr. Harris and Julian Vance—to assist with her physical therapy.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, the sun shone brightly through the sheer curtains of the living room.

Florence sat in a comfortable, soft armchair, wrapped in a hand-knit purple blanket. Her cheeks, once pale and hollow, had regained a healthy, rosy color. The dark bruises on her arms had faded completely, replaced by soft, warm skin.

Lucas walked in carrying a tray with two cups of hot chamomile tea and fresh almond pastries.

"Here you go, Mom," Lucas said gently, setting the tray on the coffee table beside her.

Florence looked at the pastries, a faint, nostalgic smile lighting up her eyes. "Almond pastries... from the bakery by the central station."

"The exact same one, Mom," Lucas smiled, taking a seat beside her. "I remembered how you used to buy them for me every Friday after you finished ironing clothes."

Florence reached out, taking Lucas’s hand in hers. Her grip was no longer weak and trembling; it was steady, warm, and filled with maternal strength.

"Lucas..." she whispered softly. "I was so scared... for so long. I thought I was going to die in that back room, and you would never know the truth."

Lucas leaned forward, resting his forehead gently against her hand. "I’m so sorry, Mom. I’m so sorry I didn't see it sooner. I trusted the wrong person."

"You have a good heart, my son," Florence said, stroking his hair gently. "Good men don't expect evil from the people they love. You didn't fail me. You saved me."

Tears welled up in Lucas’s eyes, but they were tears of deep healing and peace.

At that moment, the front doorbell rang.

Lucas stood up and opened the door. Standing on the porch were Dr. Harris and Julian Vance, both holding legal folders and a large bouquet of fresh flowers.

"May we come in?" Dr. Harris asked warmly.

"Always," Lucas smiled, stepping aside to let them in.
