Chapter 10 - The Promise Kept

One year later.

The summer morning sun streamed through the wide windows of our bedroom, bathing the wooden floors in golden light.

I sat on the edge of the bed, holding a tiny, pristine white blanket wrapped around a precious bundle.

In my arms lay our newborn daughter, Maya Sarah Vance.

She had dark, silky hair, tiny fingers that curled tightly around my thumb, and bright, curious eyes that looked up at me with absolute trust and peace.

Tessa sat beside me, resting her head against my shoulder, her arm wrapped gently around my waist as we both looked down at our daughter.

"She has your eyes, Marcus," Tessa whispered softly, a quiet tear of pure joy glistening on her cheek.

"She has your strength, my love," I replied softly, kissing the top of Maya’s soft head.

From the nightstand, my old tactical combat watch—the one I had worn through deployments in Iraq, Afghanistan, and during the fight against the Wolfe family—ticked steadily.

For years, that watch had measured countdowns to missions, tactical breaches, and moments of life and death.

Now, its steady ticks measured something far greater: the peaceful heartbeat of my family.

I looked out the window at the blooming garden, at the bright blue sky, and at the peaceful home we had fought so hard to protect.

The war was finally over.

The battlefield was behind me.

And as I held my wife and daughter close to my heart, I knew that no matter what storms might come in the future, our love was a fortress that no force on earth could ever tear down.
