Chapter 9 - The New Dawn
Three months later, an evening party was held at our home to celebrate the one-year anniversary of The Phoenix Shield foundation.
The backyard was illuminated by warm string lights hung between the oak trees. Friends, neighbors, Dr. Sarah Lin, Agent Vance, and several members of my old military unit gathered around the patio, enjoying food, music, and conversation.
Agent Vance walked up to me, holding a glass of sparkling cider. "You know, Marcus... the city council officially dissolved the Wolfe family’s corporate entities last week. Every dollar of their seized assets—over twelve million dollars—was diverted into victims' assistance funds and your wife's foundation."
"That's real justice, Vance," I smiled, clinking my glass against hers. "Not bullet rounds."
Vance smiled warmly, looking at Tessa, who was chatting happily with Sarah near the flower garden. "She’s incredible, Marcus. You two... you're something else."
"She saved me long before I saved her," I admitted softly. "The war changes a man, Vance. It makes you forget what peace feels like. She reminded me."
As the evening wore on and the guests slowly departed, the house returned to a peaceful, serene quiet.
Tessa and I walked up to the master bedroom balcony, looking out over the city lights shining in the distance under a canopy of bright stars.
I wrapped my arms around her from behind, pulling her close against my chest, resting my chin softly on her shoulder.
"What are you thinking about?" Tessa whispered, leaning her head back against mine, covering my hands with hers.
"I was thinking about the day I walked into that ICU," I murmured softly. "How broken everything felt. How I thought my life was over."
Tessa turned around in my arms, reaching up to gently cup my face in her hands. Her fingers were warm, soft, and strong.

"That dark night is gone, Marcus," she said softly, looking into my eyes with deep, infinite devotion. "You fought for me. You brought me back. And now... we have a lifetime ahead of us."
"We do," I agreed, kissing her lips gently, feeling the warmth of her breath against mine.
