Chapter 4 - Unveiling the Empire

For three hours, as the sun began to peek over the city skyline, I sat beside Emily’s bed and told her everything.

I told her about the founding of Sentinel Security Systems twenty-five years ago—the small firm that grew into a defense tech giant after I patented advanced encryption algorithms for federal infrastructure. I told her about the forty-two-million-dollar buyout, and how I took those funds to establish Vance Forensic Solutions, a private intelligence firm that quietly assisted international law enforcement in dismantling human trafficking networks, corporate embezzlement rings, and high-level extortion schemes.

Emily listened in complete silence, her dark eyes wide with amazement as the puzzle pieces of her childhood finally fell into place.

"All those 'contract repair jobs' you went on during weekends..." she whispered, realizing the truth. "The trips to Chicago, London, Miami..."

"They weren't alarm installations, Emily," I admitted gently. "They were security audits and threat assessments for people in very dangerous situations."

"And Mom?" Emily asked, her voice dropping. "Did she know?"

"Laura only cared about appearance," I said honestly. "She hated that I spent my time in workshops and field operations instead of wearing expensive suits to dinner parties. When she asked for a divorce, she thought she was leaving a mid-level technician for a high-flying real estate developer. I let her believe whatever she wanted, as long as you were taken care of."

Emily leaned back against her pillows, taking it all in. "And the trust fund? Grandpa’s money?"

"Your grandfather was my first mentor," I revealed with a faint smile. "He knew who I was. Before he died, he created that trust fund with my help, specifically structuring it so that only you could access it on your twenty-fifth birthday—unless you signed a power of attorney over to someone else. Victor discovered the clause three months ago when his own business began to fail."

A soft knock at the door interrupted us. Marcus stepped in, holding an encrypted satellite phone.

"Daniel, we have a situation," Marcus said, his tone urgent.

I stood up immediately. "What is it?"

"Victor’s legal counsel just filed an emergency motion in district court," Marcus reported. "It appears Victor didn't act alone. He had a silent partner inside the regional judicial office—Judge Richard Vance, no relation to you. Judge Vance just signed a secret gag order and a transfer request to move Victor to a private federal holding facility outside state jurisdiction."

My eyes narrowed. "He's trying to extract Victor before the State Prosecutor can unseal the evidence from the warehouse."

"Exactly," Marcus said. "If Victor reaches that federal facility, Judge Vance can suppress the video evidence under 'national security pretexts' connected to Victor's real estate defense contracts."

"Not on my watch," I said coldly.

I turned to Emily, kissing her forehead gently. "I have to step out for a few hours to finish this, sweetheart. Marcus's best team will be right outside this door."

Emily gripped my hand tightly. "Be careful, Pop."

I smiled, pulling my charcoal coat over my shoulders. "Don't worry, Emily. Handymen always finish the job."
