Chapter 9 - The Trial of Shadows

Three months later.
The Federal District Court in the state capital was surrounded by hundreds of reporters, cameras, and citizens who had followed the massive financial and criminal scandal that had shaken the state to its core.
Inside the grand courtroom, the verdict was delivered with absolute, crushing finality.
Victor Hale was sentenced to forty-five years in federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole for kidnapping, extortion, and corporate fraud. His real estate firm was completely liquidated, its remaining assets seized and transferred directly into Emily Vance’s trust fund as court-ordered restitution.
Laura Hale—stripped of her fortune, her social standing, and her freedom—was sentenced to twelve years in state prison for her role as an accessory to kidnapping and fraud.
Julian Sterling was extradited to a maximum-security federal facility, facing forty life sentences for international racketeering, illegal weapons trading, and financial terrorism.

As Victor Hale was led away in heavy iron chains, he paused for a brief moment near the railing, looking at Emily and me. He was pale, thin, dressed in an orange jumpsuit, his former arrogance completely destroyed.
