Chapter 3 - The Midnight Escape

At ten PM, Dr. Vance signed Mia's discharge papers, providing a detailed medical report containing her diagnosis, the emergency interventions performed, and official photographs of the facial trauma I had sustained.
Leo drove us directly to his quiet, suburban home on the east side of town. His wife, Clara, was waiting at the door with warm blankets, fresh soup, and a soft, comfortable bed prepared for Mia.
After we tucked Mia into bed, sleeping peacefully under the heavy duvet, I sat in Leo's kitchen holding a steaming mug of chamomile tea.
"I talked to Richard Vance—no relation to the doctor, he's a senior partner at Vance & Sterling Family Law," Leo said, setting a legal notepad on the kitchen island. "He's taking your case first thing tomorrow morning."
"What are my options, Leo?" I asked, staring down at my reflection in the amber tea. "Evan is going to claim it was joint marital property. He's going to lie and say I verbally authorized those transfers."
"He can claim whatever he wants," Leo replied coldly. "Bank fraud involving non-marital separate inheritance accounts requires written, notarized authorization waivers if the funds originate from a pre-marital trust. If he forged your digital signature on those transfer agreements, it is not a civil dispute—it is a federal financial crime."
Suddenly, my phone—which was blocked from Evan’s number—lit up with an unknown text message.
It was from Marilyn's phone:
Julia, you are acting like a hysterical child. Evan was trying to discipline an disobedient wife, and you are using our private family business to threaten us. If you do not return Mia to this house by eight AM tomorrow, I will ensure my attorneys file for emergency full custody based on parental alienation and mental instability. You won't get a dime of this family's money.
I showed the message to Leo.
Leo picked up his pen and drew a clean, sharp line through his notepad.
"Good," Leo whispered, a cold smile touching his lips. "She just admitted in writing that she knows about the incident and is attempting to blackmail you to cover up the fraud. Save that screenshot immediately."

"I used to think she was just a difficult mother-in-law," I murmured, leaning back against the wooden chair. "For seven years, I tried so hard to win her approval. I cooked her favorite meals, I let her redecorate our living room, I stayed quiet when she criticized my parenting... I thought if I served her enough, she would finally accept me."
"Cruel people don't want to accept you, Julia," Clara said softly, stepping into the kitchen and wrapping a warm cardigan around my shoulders. "They just want to consume you until there's nothing left. But you saved your daughter tonight. Now it's time to save yourself."
