Chapter 6 - The Broken Mother-in-Law

In mid-October, a court-mandated settlement conference was held at the Summit County Courthouse.
I sat on one side of the long mahogany table alongside Mr. Vance and Leo.
Opposite us sat Evan and Marilyn, accompanied by a high-priced defense attorney named Henderson, whom Marilyn had clearly hired using the last of her available credit lines.
Evan looked terrible. He had lost weight, his suit hung loosely on his shoulders, and the arrogance that had defined his demeanor for seven years had vanished, replaced by a hollow, desperate exhaustion.
Marilyn, however, still sat straight-backed, her hands clenching her designer handbag, her eyes darting toward me with pure, unadulterated venom.
"My clients are prepared to offer a full and final resolution to this unfortunate domestic misunderstanding," Henderson began, sliding a thin document across the table. "Mr. Carter agrees to a no-fault divorce decree, waives all claims to the marital residence, and offers a lump-sum payment of $30,000 to close all financial inquiries."
Mr. Vance didn't even pick up the paper. He simply pushed it back across the glass table with one finger.
"Thirty thousand dollars?" Mr. Vance chuckled softly. "Mr. Henderson, your client took $92,500 from a pre-marital inheritance trust via forged digital signatures, and another $148,000 in converted marital assets. We have already submitted our forensic report to the Grand Jury."
Henderson’s eyes twitched slightly. He leaned over and whispered frantically to Marilyn and Evan.
"Julia, please!" Evan burst out, leaning across the table, his hands shaking. "Look at what you're doing to us! Mom is sixty-two years old! She can't face criminal charges! I made a mistake, okay?! I was just trying to help my family!"
"I was your family, Evan," I said, looking him straight in the eyes without an ounce of fear or anger—only a cold, clean pity. "Mia was your family. But you chose your mother's greed over your daughter's life."
"You selfish little bitch!" Marilyn suddenly exploded, standing up so fast her chair slammed against the wall behind her. "You were nothing before my son married you! A nobody with a dead father's petty cash! Everything we took was used to build a legacy for this family!"
"Sit down, Marilyn!" her own attorney barked, pulling her arm.
"No!" Marilyn screamed, her face turning purple with rage. "She ruined everything! She turned my son against me! She called the police on us! She deserves nothing!"
Judge Hayes, who had stepped into the conference room to monitor the proceedings, stood in the doorway, flanked by two armed bailiffs.
"Mrs. Marilyn Carter," Judge Hayes said in an icy, dangerous voice. "Your behavior in this court is contemptuous. Bailiff, escort Mrs. Carter out of the building. And Mr. Henderson—inform your client that the freeze on her real estate accounts is now permanent pending her criminal trial."

Marilyn was led out of the room in tears, screaming wildly as her designer heels clicked uselessly against the marble floor.
Evan sat alone at the table, his head buried in his hands, weeping silently as his world completely collapsed around him.
