Chapter 4 - The Locks Are Changed

The next morning at eight AM, while Clara took care of Mia, Leo and I accompanied Mr. Richard Vance—a sharp, distinguished attorney with forty years of family law experience—to the Summit County Family Court.

By eleven AM, Judge Eleanor Hayes reviewed the urgent care medical report, the photos of my facial trauma, the text messages from Marilyn, and the preliminary bank statements documenting the unauthorized transfer of separate inheritance funds.

She didn't hesitate for a single second.

Judge Hayes signed an Emergency Ex Parte Order of Protection, granting me exclusive temporary possession of our marital home, full temporary legal and physical custody of Mia, and a absolute restraining order prohibiting Evan and Marilyn from coming within five hundred feet of me, my daughter, or my brother's residence.

At one PM, two marked sheriff's cruisers pulled up to the driveway of my home.

Evan's car was parked in the driveway alongside Marilyn's black SUV. They were inside the house, presumably preparing their court paperwork to carry out Marilyn's legal threats.

I stepped out of Leo's car, accompanied by Deputy Sheriff Miller and a locksmith Leo had hired.

Deputy Miller walked up the front steps and knocked heavily on the front door. "Sheriff's department! Open the door!"

The door pulled open, and Evan stood there, wearing a wrinkled dress shirt, looking like he hadn't slept a wink. Marilyn was standing right behind him in the foyer, holding a manila folder filled with papers.

"Officer, what is the meaning of this?" Marilyn demanded, stepping forward with her usual arrogant posture. "My son is the owner of this residence! We were just preparing to file an emergency custody—"

"Evan Carter?" Deputy Miller interrupted sternly, pulling an official court document from his clipboard. "You are hereby served with an Emergency Order of Protection issued by the Summit County Family Court. You have fifteen minutes to collect your personal clothing and basic hygiene items and vacate these premises immediately."

Evan’s face went dead white. "What?! Vacate my own house?! This is a mistake! My wife is unstable!"

"The order grants sole temporary occupancy to Julia Carter," Deputy Miller stated, stepping into the doorway, his hand resting calmly on his belt. "If you do not comply within fifteen minutes, or if you make any attempt to contact or approach Mrs. Carter, you will be arrested on the spot for violation of a protective order."

Marilyn gasped, clutching her chest. "This is outrageous! Julia, you ungrateful little snake! We took you in! We made you part of this family!"

"You didn't take me in, Marilyn," I said, stepping past the deputy into the foyer, looking at her with a calm, unwavering gaze. "You stole ninety thousand dollars from my dead father's inheritance, and your son put his hands on me while my daughter was sick. You have fourteen minutes left to get out."

The locksmith immediately began unscrewing the front deadbolt, replacing it with a high-security electronic lock system.

Evan stared at me, his eyes wide with a mixture of panic, disbelief, and desperate regret. "Julia... please. Can we just talk? Just five minutes alone? I'll give the money back! I'll make Mom pay it back!"

"Talk to my attorney, Evan," I said, turning my back on him as the locksmith slammed the new deadbolt into place.
