Chapter 3 - The Gathering of Shadows

It took forty-five minutes for the headlights of Jack’s Mercedes SUV to sweep across the high stained-glass windows of the living room.
I sat in the high-backed velvet armchair opposite the cold fireplace, holding a crystal glass of ice water. The house was completely dark except for the single table lamp beside my chair.
The front doors slammed open with enough force to rattle the iron fixtures in the foyer.
"MEGAN!" Jack’s voice roared through the empty house, laced with panic, anger, and absolute fury. "MEGAN, WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU?!"
Heavy footsteps echoed across the marble floor. Jack burst into the living room, his neck ties undone, his hair disheveled, his face flushed red with rage and sweat. Behind him rushed Carol, her designer sunglasses clutched in her trembling hand, and Ashley, looking pale and terrified.
Chloe was nowhere to be seen. He had likely dumped her at a hotel to protect what was left of his public image.
Jack stopped dead when he saw me sitting calmly in the armchair, my posture straight, my expression unreadable.
"What did you do?" Jack demanded, taking a heavy step toward me, his finger pointing aggressively at my face. "What the hell did you do, Megan?! The hospital froze my credentials! My accounts are locked! The bank just served me with a foreclosure notice on the practice! What kind of sick game are you playing?!"
"Jack," Carol warned from behind him, her voice shrill with panic. "Ask her about the trust! The bank teller said the Walker Heritage Trust was completely emptied and moved into escrow!"
I took a slow sip of my water, set the glass down on the side table, and looked at my husband of ten years.
"You lied to me, Jack," I said quietly. My voice didn't rise above a conversational tone, yet it filled the high-ceilinged room with an suffocating weight. "You told me you were scrubbing into emergency surgery to save a life."
Jack flinched as if I had struck him across the face.
His jaw opened and closed, but no sound came out for three full seconds. The anger in his eyes flickered, replaced by a sudden, sickening realization.
"You..." he stammered, his posture collapsing slightly. "How... where were you?"
"Terminal C," I said smoothly. "Upper mezzanine level. Near Gate 14. You were wearing the gray sport coat I bought you. Chloe looked lovely in her white cashmere sweater, by the way. Though I think the platinum tennis bracelet you gave her was a bit unoriginal, considering you bought the exact same style for your sister last Christmas."
Carol let out a sharp gasp, covering her mouth with both hands. Ashley backed toward the foyer door, her eyes wide with terror.
Jack took two steps backward, collapsing onto the edge of the leather sofa as if his legs could no longer support his weight. "Megan... listen to me... it’s not... it’s not what you think—"
"Don't," I interrupted, raising my hand slightly. "Don't embarrass yourself with a pathetic lie, Jack. You are a surgeon. You are supposed to be intelligent. Do not insult both of us by trying to explain why your mother, your sister, your children, and your mistress were boarding an international flight to St. Barts while you told me you were saving a life."
"Megan, please!" Carol interjected, stepping forward with her hands clasped together in an desperate entreaty. "It was a mistake! Jack was stressed! He's been under so much pressure at the hospital! I told him not to bring her, I swore to him it was a terrible idea, but—"
"Shut up, Carol," I said, turning my gaze toward her.
Carol froze. In ten years, I had never raised my voice to her. I had never contradicted her. I had swallowed every insult, every condescending remark, every subtle dismissal with a polite smile.
"You sat at my breakfast table yesterday and drank the tea I poured for you while knowing your son was planning to abandon me," I said, my eyes cold as slate. "You let me plan your grandson’s birthday party while helping Jack hide his mistress's travel documents. You are not a mother-in-law, Carol. You are an accomplice to a fraud."
May you like
"Now see here!" Carol sputtered, her face turning crimson with outrage. "You can't speak to me like that in my son's house!"
"This isn't his house, Carol," I replied, standing up slowly from my chair. "This house was purchased using funds from the Vance Estate. The title is in my maiden name. And as of forty minutes ago, you, Jack, and Ashley are formally trespassing on my private property."
