Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of Walker

Within seventy-two hours of the hospital board meeting, the dominoes fell with terrifying speed.

The story of the prominent Dallas vascular surgeon who faked an emergency surgery to go on an international spree with his mistress while using a fraudulent family shell company hit the local media. The Dallas Morning News ran a front-page exposé detailing the federal investigation into the Medicare fraud scheme.

Carol and Ashley were formally served with subpoenas by federal federal marshals at Carol's gated suburban home.

On Friday morning, I sat in the living room of my Southlake house—which was now fully secured with new digital locks and private security guards stationed at the gate—when my doorbell rang.

I opened the door.

Carol stood on the porch. The proud, arrogant woman who had spent a decade treating me like an unwelcome outsider looked like a ghost. Her silver hair was messy, her clothes unironed, her face pale and lined with deep terror.

Behind her stood Ashley, clutching her toddler daughter's hand, weeping silently.

"Megan," Carol choked out, her voice trembling violently. "Please... you have to help us."

I stood in the doorway, my arms folded across my chest, my posture straight and unyielding. "You are trespassing, Carol."

"Megan, please!" Carol fell to her knees right there on my stone porch, reaching out to grasp the hem of my trousers. "They froze my bank accounts! The federal agents came to my house this morning! They said I could face five years in federal prison for signing those company papers! I didn't know what Jack was doing! I swear to God I didn't know!"

"You received a six-thousand-dollar monthly check from that shell company for three years, Carol," I said, looking down at her without a single trace of pity. "You used that money to pay for your country club membership, your lease on your Lexus, and your European vacations. You didn't ask questions because you loved the luxury my sacrifice provided."

"I’m sorry!" Carol sobbed, pressing her forehead against the cool stone step. "I’m so sorry, Megan! I was wrong about you! I was wrong about everything! Please, call your attorneys... tell them to leave us out of it! Jack is the one who did this! Take everything he has, but please don't let them take my house!"

Ashley stepped forward, tears streaming down her cheeks. "Megan... we’re family... please, think of the kids..."

I looked at Ashley, then at her little girl, and finally down at Carol weeping on her knees.

"When I stood above Terminal C four days ago," I said softly, my voice carrying the weight of absolute truth, "I watched you, Ashley, laugh while taking pictures of Jack kissing another woman. I watched you, Carol, adjust your sunglasses and smile like I didn't exist. Not one of you thought of me. Not one of you said, 'Where is Megan?' or 'This is wrong.'"

I took a step back into the foyer.

"You were family when it was convenient for you," I said. "Now, you are simply co-defendants in a federal fraud case. Do not come to my house again."

I pressed the button on the wall, and the heavy iron doors slid shut, sealing out their desperate cries as I walked back into my quiet, peaceful home.
