Chapter 4 - The Legal Scythe

The heavy mahogany doors of the Southlake estate didn't slam behind Jack, Carol, and Ashley; they clicked shut with the precise, mechanical sound of a trap snapping shut.
By 8:00 AM the following morning, my brownstone office in downtown Dallas had become ground zero for the complete financial dismantling of Jack Walker's life.
Gerald sat across from me at the glass conference table, surrounded by three junior associates from Vance & Sterling. Stacked between us were thick manila folders containing ten years of Jack's personal, corporate, and medical practice records.
"He hired Arthur Vance," Gerald stated, sliding a legal notice across the table to me.
I looked at the document. Arthur Vance was my uncle—a ruthless, high-priced defense attorney who had spent forty years protecting Dallas's elite from the consequences of their own corruption. Jack thought that by hiring my family's former black sheep, he could force me into a quiet, cheap settlement.
"Arthur called me at 7:00 AM," Gerald continued with a dry, humorless smirk. "He thought he was dealing with the soft, dutiful girl who left the firm ten years ago. I sent him the preliminary audit report of Jack's practice. He hasn't called back."
"What did the audit uncover?" I asked, sipping my black coffee.
"It's worse than we thought," Gerald said, opening a thick blue binder. "Jack wasn't just using your inheritance to fund his affair with Chloe Montgomery. He’s been systematically overbilling Medicare for vascular procedures he never performed, using a shell LLC registered in Delaware under his mother's maiden name."
I set my coffee cup down with a quiet clink. "Carol's name is on the registration?"
"Yes," Gerald confirmed. "And Ashley was listed as the primary payroll officer for the shell company, receiving a six-figure salary for a job that required zero hours of work per week. They didn't just know about his double life, Megan. They were financially dependent on his fraud."
A heavy silence filled the glass conference room.
It was one thing to discover a husband's infidelity; it was entirely another to realize that an entire family had treated my life, my wealth, and my sacrifice as a cash cow to be milked until dry.
"Where is Jack right now?" I asked.
"He's staying at a mid-tier hotel near the medical district," Gerald said. "Chloe left him three hours after they got back from the airport when she realized his corporate credit cards were declined and his assets were frozen. She’s currently talking to a personal injury attorney, claiming Jack made promises of financial support in exchange for her leaving her pharmaceutical job."
I let out a soft, cold breath. "Poetic justice."
"It gets better," Gerald added. "The Board of Directors at St. Jude Memorial has formally suspended his surgical privileges pending an internal investigation into his falsified emergency surgery logs. He has a meeting with the hospital ethics committee at 2:00 PM today."
I stood up, adjusting the lapels of my tailored navy suit coat.
"Cancel my afternoon appointments, Gerald," I said, picking up my leather handbag. "I'm going to attend that committee meeting."

"You don't have standing to enter an internal hospital committee meeting, Megan," Gerald noted with a raised eyebrow.
I smiled—a sharp, lethal expression that had once made corporate embezzlers pale in courtrooms across Texas. "My grandfather donated the wing that bears his name, Gerald. I am the principal director of the Vance Charitable Trust, which provides forty percent of St. Jude's annual surgical research grant. I don't just have standing—I hold the lease."
