Chapter 2 - The Arrest and the Narrative Shift

Three paramedics and two uniformed police officers rushed into the nursery, their eyes sweeping the scene—the shattered glass, Clara pale and bleeding on the rocking chair, and Eleanor standing frozen in the center of the room.

"Officers, thank God!" Eleanor instantly activated her theatrical charm, her eyes welling with instant, practiced tears as she gestured toward Clara. "My daughter-in-law had a severe postpartum episode! She smashed her medication! I was trying to protect the baby—"

"Officer," I interrupted calmly, stepping forward and handing the lead officer my phone. "My name is David Miller. I am the homeowner. My mother, Eleanor Miller, broke into my wife’s prescription cabinet, destroyed her pain medication, denied her medical care while she was hemorrhaging, and held our newborn son hostage to force my wife onto the floor."

The officer took the phone, pressing play on the footage.

As Eleanor’s cruel voice echoed through the room from the video playback, the second officer immediately moved around Eleanor, unholstering his handcuffs.

"What are you doing?!" Eleanor shrieked as the steel cuff clicked onto her wrist. "Take your hands off me! I am Eleanor Miller! I am a board member of the County Family Foundation! Do you know who I am?!"

"Ma'am, you have the right to remain silent," the officer said sternly, pulling her arms behind her back. "You are under arrest for domestic abuse, reckless endangerment of a minor, and felony destruction of medical property."

"David! Tell them to stop!" Eleanor screamed, her polished mask completely shattering into pure, chaotic rage as she was marched out of the nursery. "I did this for you! She’s ruining your life! You’re choosing this broken woman over your own mother?!"

Downstairs, the front door slammed shut.

The paramedics immediately went to work on Clara, checking her vital signs and stabilizing her incision.

"She has active internal bleeding from stress and physical exertion," the paramedic reported, prepping a gurney. "We need to transport her to Saint Jude’s Emergency Surgical Unit immediately."

Clara reached out, her eyes wide with panic as they moved her onto the stretcher. "Noah... where is Noah?"

"I have him," I swore, lifting our sleeping son from the bassinet and wrapping him securely against my chest. "I’m right behind you, Clara. Nobody is ever coming between us again."
