Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

The backlash was swift, violent, and absolute.

The video exploded across every major platform. The sight of Eleanor—a woman who built her entire career lecturing mothers on gentle parenting—standing over a bleeding woman with a stolen baby and demanding she crawl on broken glass shocked the public to its core.

By 3:00 AM, Eleanor’s corporate sponsors began issuing frantic public statements terminating their contracts with her.

The County Family Foundation released a statement revoking her board seat with immediate effect and launching an internal investigation into her past charitable fund management.

In the hallway outside the surgical ward, the heavy doors opened. Dr. Vance, Clara’s surgeon, walked out pulling off his surgical mask.

"David?" he called out.

I stood up instantly, my heart in my throat. "How is she?"

"She was very lucky," Dr. Vance said, letting out a heavy sigh. "The physical stress caused a major tear in her abdominal wall where her C-section incision was healing. If she had been forced to bend down and clean that floor, the pressure would have caused catastrophic internal hemorrhaging."

I squeezed my eyes shut, rage boiling in my veins. Eleanor hadn't just been cruel; she had been fully aware that forcing Clara to bend over could kill her.

"She is stable now," Dr. Vance continued, resting a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "We repaired the tear. She’s resting in recovery. But David... she needs absolute peace. No stress, no fear, no trauma."

"She will have it," I promised. "I'm making sure of that."

At that moment, my phone rang. It was an incoming call from the county jail.

I pressed answer.

"David!" Eleanor’s voice came screeching through the line, entirely devoid of her usual polished cadence. "What did you post?! What did you do to my accounts?! My manager called me on the jail phone! My sponsors are dropping me! People are outside my house with cameras! Remove those videos right now!"

"No," I said softly.

"I am your mother!" she raged, her voice cracking with fury. "You are destroying my life over a stupid misunderstanding! I raised you! I gave you everything! You owe me!"

"You tried to kill my wife, Eleanor," I said, using her first name for the first time in my life. "You used my son as a prop for your ego. You aren't a mother. You're a parasite. And this isn't just a post—it's the beginning of your complete legal and financial liquidation."

I hung up the phone and blocked the jail’s number.
